The cycling day in the Wipptal Valley
The Wipptaler Radtag, known in Italian as Alta Valle Isarco in Bici, is a staple of the South Tyrolean spring. Every year, on a Sunday in May, the six municipalities of the Wipptal Valley transform their network of cycle paths into a large, festive circuit open to everyone. This is not a race, but a free, non-competitive cycling excursion: everyone pedals at their own pace, chooses their preferred starting point, and discovers the valley one pedal stroke at a time.
The course is a loop that winds for over 90 kilometres through the towns of Vipiteno, Prati, Campo di Trens, Mezzaselva, Mareta, Colle Isarco, and Brennero. Several starting and control points are set up along the route: you can start from the main square in Vipiteno, the park in Prati, the sports area in Campo di Trens, the festival grounds in Mareta and Colle Isarco, or the sports field in Brennero. Participants receive a card that is stamped at control points and returned at the finish line to enter a prize draw.
What makes the Wipptaler Radtag special is the backdrop of events accompanying the ride. Between towns, local associations, businesses, and museums offer live music, entertainment, and refreshment points serving snacks, hot meals, drinks, coffee, and pastries. There is no shortage of activities for families and children, such as bicycle road safety courses, climbing walls, e-bike test rides, and magic shows, as well as demonstrations by the fire department and law enforcement.
The event is organized by the Wipptal Community (Bezirksgemeinschaft Wipptal) together with the municipalities of Brennero, Fortezza, Campo di Trens, Val di Vizze, Racines, and Vipiteno, all located in the province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Participation is completely free, and the initiative aims to promote sustainable mobility and the slow discovery of one of South Tyrol's most picturesque valleys, at the foot of the Brenner Pass.
The 2026 edition of the Wipptaler Radtag was held on Sunday, May 17, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The loop route of over 90 kilometres passed through Vipiteno, Prati, Campo di Trens, Mezzaselva, Mareta, Colle Isarco, and Brennero, with seven starting points and several control points for card stamping.
Along the route, there was plenty of live music, e-bike test rides, road safety courses for children, climbing walls, fire department demonstrations, magic shows, and open museums, as well as numerous refreshment points. The free, non-competitive event was organized by the Wipptal Community together with the municipalities of the Wipptal Valley.
A Sunday in May, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Registration and departures are possible from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; the card must be returned to the finish line by 4:00 PM.
The Wipptal Valley is served by the A22 Brenner motorway (Vipiteno-Val di Vizze and Brennero exits) and the Brenner railway line, with stations in Vipiteno-Val di Vizze, Fortezza, and Brennero. Many starting points are accessible by train with your bike in tow.
Participation is free.
