Three nights of Irpinian wine, rustic cuisine, and folk music in the village of Teora
Every year in mid-July, the historic center of Teora — a small village in Alta Irpinia, in the province of Avellino, deep in the heart of inland Campania — lights up for the Wine & Taranta Fest. Launched in 2016 by the local Pro Loco and promoted in partnership with the Municipality of Teora, the festival has successfully evolved from a classic village fair into a recognized event that attracts thousands of visitors from both the province and beyond over the course of three nights.
The formula is clear from the name itself: on one hand, the wine of Irpinia, land of Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo; on the other, the taranta, the folk music of the South, ranging from the Campanian tarantella to the Salento pizzica. It is a fusion that organizers describe as a bridge between Campania and Salento, bringing two sister musical traditions together on the same stage.
The event layout is well-established: two stages, one in Piazza Centrale and one in the Piazzetta, alternating throughout the evening with no downtime. At the Piazzetta, around 8:30 PM, emerging bands and local folk groups perform; in Piazza Centrale, starting at 9:30 PM, the big names of the Italian ethno-folk scene take the stage. To close the night, DJ sets keep the rhythm going until the early hours, blending contemporary, Mediterranean, and Latin sounds — a key element that bridges the generational gap, one of the organizers' primary goals.
Over the years, artists such as Eugenio Bennato (a guest in the early editions with his Taranta Power movement), Mimmo Cavallaro, I Calanti, Antonio Amato, and Scazzacatarante have graced the Teora stage. It is a lineup that fosters a dialogue between different musical languages without losing its popular identity.
Starting at 6:00 PM, food stalls open along the streets and squares of the historic center. While the menu changes from year to year, the concept remains consistent:
The format is designed as a journey: you eat and drink while wandering through the alleys, moving from one stage to the other, as the festival gradually takes over the entire village.
On Sunday, the festival embraces an outdoor dimension with an afternoon trekking excursion organized in collaboration with local associations along the trails surrounding Teora. It is a way to connect the event to the landscape of Alta Irpinia — with its rolling hills, woods, and the Ofanto Valley — and to help visitors discover the area beyond the evening concerts.
Teora is a town of a few thousand inhabitants that, like many centers in this area, still bears the marks of the reconstruction following the 1980 Irpinia earthquake. Because of this, the festival has taken on a value that goes beyond mere entertainment: it is an identity-defining event, built by local volunteers, that brings emigrants back home and fills the squares during one of the most vibrant weeks of the summer. The Wine & Taranta Fest is part of the municipal summer program «Teora R...Estate» and is included in the network of events promoted by the Province of Avellino through Sistema Irpinia.
Visitors here won't find a massive stadium festival, but something rarer: an authentic, free folk festival where traditional music is not just a folkloric citation but a living practice, danced in the square by both young and old. It is perhaps the best way to understand what inland Campania is today, far from the coast and the most beaten tourist paths.
From July 10 to 12, 2026, Teora hosted the ninth edition of the Wine & Taranta Fest, confirming the formula that has made the event so recognizable: quality folk music, wine from the Avellino province, and local cuisine, all with free admission in the historic center of the Alta Irpinia village.
The 2026 edition was included in the summer program of the Municipality of Teora, «Teora R...Estate 2026», presented as a season «full of culture, music, and solidarity» that brought together cultural, sporting, and religious events from June to August. The festival remained its flagship event.
Once again, the artistic lineup fostered a dialogue between Campania and Salento: from the Campanian tarantella to the pizzica, with emerging bands on the Piazzetta stage at 8:30 PM and headline acts in Piazza Centrale at 9:30 PM. Each evening concluded with DJ sets that kept the party going until late at night.
The hiking component was also confirmed: on Sunday afternoon, a trekking route allowed visitors to discover the landscape around Teora before the final evening of concerts.
The program is as released by the organizers and local press; times and lineups may have undergone minor adjustments during the event.
Teora is located in Alta Irpinia, in the eastern part of the province of Avellino. By car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Grottaminarda exit and continue on the junction towards Lioni, then follow the SS7 Ofantina road to Teora. From Naples and Salerno, the journey takes approximately one and a half to two hours.
The historic center is pedestrianized during the festival evenings: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the village and reach the squares on foot in a few minutes.
Admission to all evenings and concerts is free of charge. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls and tasting stations.
