The Wild Boar Festival in Bassano Romano, in the Viterbo Tuscia region
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of summer, the small village of Bassano Romano, in the province of Viterbo, comes alive with the Wild Boar Festival, one of the most beloved gastronomic celebrations in the upper Tuscia region. For an entire weekend, usually in the second half of August, the town's spaces fill with stalls, aromas, and music, drawing in both locals and visitors from neighboring towns.
At the heart of the festival is, of course, wild boar, the iconic ingredient of Lazio's game cuisine. The food stalls typically offer traditional specialties: pappardelle with wild boar ragรน, wild boar stew, sausages, and roasts, served alongside local wines and seasonal side dishes. It is the perfect opportunity to rediscover authentic flavors rooted in the local hunting and farming culture.
As with the best village festivals, the Wild Boar Festival is about more than just food: evenings are accompanied by live music, dance orchestras, and entertainment that turn the event into a popular celebration for all ages. The convivial, open-air atmosphere is an integral part of the experience.
The event is organized by the Cacciatori di Sant'Uberto association of Bassano Romano, led by president Rinaldo Giardini. Beyond promoting the tradition of hunting and wild boar cuisine, the association donates part of the festival's proceeds to local charitable initiatives: following the 2025 edition, for example, materials were donated to the local comprehensive school.
Located in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region, Bassano Romano is a village known for the monumental Palazzo Odescalchi and the woods surrounding the town. The festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover this corner of the Tuscia, blending history, nature, and gastronomy.
The Wild Boar Festival is traditionally held in the second half of August. The official dates for the 2026 edition, already announced by the organizers, will be communicated through local channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
Following the success of the 2025 edition, the Cacciatori di Sant'Uberto association has confirmed that the Wild Boar Festival of Bassano Romano will return in 2026. At the moment, neither the official dates nor the detailed calendar of evenings have been published. The event is expected, as usual, in the second half of August, with traditional wild boar specialties from the Viterbo Tuscia, live music, and the popular festive atmosphere that characterizes the event. This page will be updated as soon as the organizers release the full program.
Bassano Romano can be reached by car via the Via Cassia (SS2) or the A1 motorway, taking the Orte or Magliano Sabina exits and continuing towards the Viterbo Tuscia. The Bassano Romano train station is served by the regional Rome-Viterbo line.
Admission to the festival is generally free; dishes can be purchased directly at the food stalls. It is recommended to check updated dates and times on the organizing association's channels before traveling.
