Ten kilometers through woodlands and the Great Waterfall, in the heart of Ciociaria
The Water Race is the stage that brings Lazio's running scene every May to the historic center of Isola del Liri, a town in the Province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. It is a competitive road race of approximately 10 kilometers, part of a short circuit that touches several towns in Ciociaria and awards individual and team rankings.
The connection to water is more than just a catchy title: the event was born within the framework of the National Land Reclamation and Irrigation Week and is promoted by local Land Reclamation Consortia together with ANBI Lazio, with the goal of raising awareness about the sustainable management of water resources. Technical organization is handled by ASD Atletica Frosinone, which manages timing, assistance, and safety along the route.
The course is one of the most recognizable in the provincial running calendar. The start takes place along Via Valcatoio and immediately leads athletes through the trees of the Viscogliosi Green Area, with an initial stretch immersed in nature. The group then returns to the city to tackle five laps of an urban loop that crosses Via G. Mazzini, Via Selva, Largo Bottaro, Via Chiastra, Via Lungoliri Chiastra, Via Lungoliri della Repubblica, and Corso Roma.
The surface is mixed—asphalt, dirt, and packed gravel—requiring some attention when choosing footwear. However, the true distinctive element remains the scenery: the final laps are run around the Great Waterfall, the 27-meter natural drop that opens right in the middle of the town, making Isola del Liri a nearly unique case in Europe, with a natural waterfall in its historic center.
The race is open to FIDAL-registered athletes, OPES athletes, and members of Sports Promotion Bodies, as well as Runcard holders in good standing with the current year's membership. The registration fee is affordable and includes a bib with a microchip, timing, a technical jersey, insurance, medical assistance, photography service, and refreshment points.
The award ceremony takes place on the Panoramic Terrace at the foot of the town's waterfall, a setting that alone is worth the trip. Prizes include local wines, from Cesanese del Piglio DOCG to Passerina del Frusinate: a direct way to link the sporting awards to the province's agricultural products.
Those arriving in Isola del Liri to run will find a city perfect for exploring on foot: the Boncompagni Viscogliosi Castle, the historic main street, the riverfronts, and naturally the two waterfalls—the Great one and the Valcatoio one—which have made the town a small case study of both industrial and natural landscape, having powered the historic paper mills of the Liri Valley for decades.
The race afternoon attracts sports clubs from all over Ciociaria and the Castelli Romani, with a village festival atmosphere: crowds along the barriers, families on the bridges, and local merchants involved in the event. It is one of the best occasions of the year to discover this corner of southern Lazio.
The 2026 Water Race was divided into two events within the National Land Reclamation and Irrigation Week (May 16-24, 2026): the first stage in Anagni on May 17 and the second, decisive one, in Isola del Liri on Saturday, May 23.
In Anagni, success went to Daniele Vulpiani (27'24") ahead of Antonello Di Cicco (28'07") and Diego Papoccia (28'44"); among the women, Serena Fanella (32'44") won over Simona Magrini (34'41") and Roberta Andreoli (36'08"). On the eve of the Isola stage, the team ranking saw Atletica Ferentino in the lead with 274 points, followed by Atl. Colleferro Segni (224), Runners Team Colleferro (189), Pol. Atletica Ceprano (160), Atletica Città dei Papi Anagni (124), and Podisti Valmontone (120).
In Isola del Liri, the meeting point was set for 3:00 PM with the start at 4:30 PM, on a course of about 10 kilometers with a mixed surface of asphalt, dirt, and packed gravel.
The Isola del Liri stage was preceded by the Anagni stage, held on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
By car: A1 motorway, Frosinone or Ceprano exit, then the Sora-Ferentino highway towards Isola del Liri (about 20 minutes from Frosinone). By train: Isola del Liri station on the Roccasecca-Avezzano line, or Frosinone station with Cotral bus connections.
Online registration via the Raceservice.it platform, fee of 5 euros per race. Reserved for FIDAL-registered athletes, OPES, Sports Promotion Bodies, and valid Runcard holders.
The surface is mixed: shoes suitable for dirt paths are recommended. Gathering in the early afternoon, with the start in the late afternoon: bring a cap and hydration for the wait. Parking is available in the center, which experiences traffic changes during race hours.
