On August 15th in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, the Procession of the Assumption parades through the village streets in ancient Walser costumes
August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, is one of the most cherished dates in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, a Walser village at the foot of Monte Rosa in the Lys Valley (Aosta Valley). After the 10:30 AM Holy Mass, the community brings to life a traditional procession through the village streets, an occasion where ancient costumes and the identity of the German-speaking minority re-emerge.
The most anticipated moment is the parade in the Walser costume. The women of Gressoney wear one of the most beautiful costumes in the entire Aosta Valley: a long red woolen skirt, a white blouse, a black apron decorated with lace, a black velvet bodice embellished with gold embroidery, and, above all, the unmistakable gold filigree cap. An outfit that is still worn today on the most important occasions of the year.
The procession is a choral rite that unites the religious and identity dimensions: the young people of the village carry the sacred statue in procession, followed by the women in costume. It is one of the moments when Walser culture is displayed in its most authentic form, before the eyes of residents and visitors.
Together with similar celebrations in neighboring Gressoney-La-Trinité, the Ferragosto procession of Gressoney-Saint-Jean represents one of the symbolic events of the Walser summer, capable of conveying this community's deep connection with its history, its language, and the mountains.
For August 15, 2026, Gressoney-Saint-Jean once again celebrates the Walser Costume Ferragosto Procession. The program follows the traditional format: Holy Mass at 10:30 AM, followed by the procession through the village streets, with women in traditional costume and young people accompanying the sacred statue. A fixed event in the religious and identity calendar of the Walser community.
The Mass time and any updates will be confirmed by the Parish of Gressoney-Saint-Jean closer to the date.
