June 24th in Gressoney-Saint-Jean: procession in Walser costume and offering of lambs
June 24th is the most important date in the calendar of Gressoney-Saint-Jean: it celebrates Saint John the Baptist, the village's patron saint, to whom the village also owes its name ("Saint-Jean"). It is one of the most cherished anniversaries for the Walser-speaking community in the upper Lys Valley, at the foot of Monte Rosa, and the occasion when the village proudly displays its centuries-old costumes and traditions.
The festival begins on the evening of June 23rd, with the traditional Saint John's bonfires lit in the various hamlets of the village: an ancient rite linked to the summer solstice, which illuminates the shortest nights of the year.
The heart of the festival is on the morning of June 24th. After the Solemn Mass, the evocative procession in traditional costume takes place through the streets of the historic center. The women parade in the typical red and white dress of Gressoney, adorned with the gold filigree cap of 16th-century tradition, one of the most precious and recognizable costumes in the Alps. During the celebration, the offering of lambs, an ancient ritual gesture of the community, also takes place.
At Obre Platz, the village's main square, the Greschoney Trachtengruppe folk group performs, preserving traditional Walser songs and dances. In the afternoon, the festival continues with lunch, music, and dancing. An event that, more than most, tells the story of Gressoney-Saint-Jean's identity, in the province of Aosta, blending faith, costume, and Germanic Alpine culture.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist takes place on June 23 and 24 in Gressoney-Saint-Jean.
On the eve, the evening of June 23 (9:00 PM), traditional bonfires are lit in the village's hamlets. On June 24, after the solemn Mass at 10:30 AM with the offering of lambs, the community parades in traditional costume: women wear the red and white Gressoney dress with the gold filigree cap. At Obre Platz, the Greschoney Trachtengruppe folk group performs; in the afternoon, there will be lunch, music, and dancing.
Gressoney-Saint-Jean can be reached from Pont-Saint-Martin by driving up the Lys Valley along the SR44. The celebrations take place between the Parish Church and Obre Platz, in the center of the village.
