Guided walk through farmhouses, woods, and the castle of Solonghello
Walking the Monferrato is one of the longest-running and most beloved gentle hiking series in Piedmont. Promoted by the Sacri Monti Management Authority through the Sacro Monte di Crea Special Reserve, in collaboration with the municipalities of the Monferrato region, the event accompanies thousands of walkers every year along a network of themed itineraries through hills, vineyards, and woods, where – as the spirit of the series goes – « the road itself is the destination ».
The village of Solonghello, a small hillside municipality in the Province of Alessandria that developed around its castle, hosts one of the most evocative stages of the series. The meeting point is set in the square in front of the « Il Rustico di Solonghello » club, near the junction for the hamlet of Fabiano. From here, an easy panoramic loop of approximately 7 kilometers begins, classified as T (tourist) difficulty and lasting about two hours and fifteen minutes.
From the starting point, the trail follows a grassy, flat path towards the Valle Cerrina, before rising gently up to the Cascine Cignale farmhouses. The walk continues through cultivated fields to the hamlet of Fabiano, where you will find a beautiful Baroque church dedicated to Sant'Eusebio, finally reaching the village of Solonghello and the charming Piazza Dante Alighieri at the foot of the castle.
Walking in Solonghello means crossing an authentic stretch of the Casale Monferrato area, among farmhouses, clearings, and panoramic views of the surrounding hills. A qualified guide accompanies participants, illustrating the naturalistic and historical peculiarities of the places visited during stops along the way, while the local community enlivens the stage with its customary hospitality.
The Solonghello stage is part of a regional calendar that enhances the hilly landscape of the Monferrato, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site along with the Langhe and Roero. Walking the Monferrato is an invitation to slowly discover this territory of the Piedmont Region, among villages, castles, and farmhouses, in the company of local communities and the organizations that bring each stage to life.
The Solonghello stage of the Walking the Monferrato series was held on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
