In the summer calendar of the Viterbo Tuscia region, the Maccherona Biedana Festival in Blera holds a special place. For three days in early August, this northern Lazio village puts its signature pasta, the maccherona biedana, on the table and opens its streets to residents and visitors alike in a festive, popular atmosphere. The event takes place within the framework of the Volunteering Festival, serving as its gastronomic heart: proceeds and organization revolve around the dedication of local associations and volunteers, with the Pro Loco of Blera at the forefront.
Maccherona biedana is a fresh pasta deeply rooted in the village's identity. Its very name reflects local origins: tradition suggests it derives from Beida, the ancient name for Blera, or from the Biedano stream that flows through the valley below the town. Dressed with traditional peasant-style sauces, it is prepared and served at stalls set up in the historic center, where visitors can also sample other local products in a journey designed to help you discover and love the Tuscia region through its flavors.
The village turns into a grand open-air celebration: along the alleys and in the squares, you will find food stalls, exhibitions, games, shows, live music, and the traditional country evening. Beyond the dining experience, the Antico Presente association offers free guided tours (by reservation) to uncover the palaces, alleys, and legends of the town: from walks through the historic center to moonlit night tours to the evocative Etruscan Cavone carved into the rock, not to mention nature excursions toward Petrolo with sunset tastings of local products.
Located in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio, Blera is a small village of Etruscan origin nestled in a landscape of gorges, forests, and ancient roads. The festival is the perfect opportunity to combine a culinary journey with a visit to the area, featuring rock-cut necropolises, Etruscan trenches, and the charm of the medieval center. An authentic, free-entry event that weaves together taste, culture, and community spirit.
For 2026, the village of Blera is once again preparing to host the Maccherona Biedana Festival, a summer event dedicated to the town's signature pasta and the Volunteering Festival. Maintaining the format of previous years, the event is expected to bring the historic center to life in early August with food stalls, live music, a country evening, and guided tours. Official dates and the complete program will be announced by the Pro Loco of Blera in the weeks leading up to the event.
Blera is located in the province of Viterbo, in northern Lazio. By car, it can be reached via the Braccianese-Claudia road (SR493) or the Orte-Viterbo-Civitavecchia expressway, taking the Barbarano Romano-Blera exit. The nearest train stations are in Viterbo and Civitavecchia, from where you can continue by bus or car.
Admission to the festival is free; food can be purchased at the stalls managed by volunteers. Guided tours are free but require mandatory reservation (via WhatsApp) including your name, number of participants, and choice of route.
Bring comfortable shoes for the uphill alleys of the historic center and for the nature hike. For up-to-date information on dates and the program, please contact the Pro Loco of Blera.
