The patronal feast of Saint Ermete and the truffle festival in the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia
At the end of August, the small town of Blera, in the Province of Viterbo, in the heart of the Lazio Tuscia, gathers around its co-patron Saint Ermete. The Saint Ermete Celebrations coincide with the Truffle and Local Organic Products Festival, an event that in just a few years has become the highlight of the Blera summer and a key gastronomic reference point for the area.
The heart of the festival lies in the gastronomic stands set up in the squares and along the streets of the historic center, managed by the Blera Agrarian University together with local agricultural cooperatives. The absolute star is the truffle of the Tuscia, featured in numerous recipes and accompanied by the territory's extra virgin olive oil and meat, all short-chain, organic products. The long tables set up in the square invite visitors to sit, taste, and experience the conviviality typical of village festivals.
Alongside the gastronomic dimension, the religious component remains vibrant. The most poignant moment is the procession on Sunday morning, when the saint's relics are carried through the village streets, accompanied by the town band. It is the spiritual heart of the festival, renewing the deep bond between the community and its patron each year.
The evenings are enlivened by live music and roving entertainment, while an art exhibition can be visited at Palazzo Lattanzi. There is also the traditional tombola (bingo) with a rich prize pool, and the Saint Ermete lottery. In recent years, the festival has also hosted EtrusComics, the festival dedicated to comics, cosplay, manga, video games, and retrogaming, which brings a young audience to Blera and transforms the squares into a bridge between the village's Etruscan history and contemporary pop culture.
Nestled along the ancient roads that connected the cities of Etruria, Blera preserves fascinating Etruscan and medieval remains. The late-August festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of Lazio, among tuff alleys, genuine flavors, and a welcoming community that opens its doors to visitors.
