Viterbo celebrates solidarity: a month of meetings, culture, and participation in the heart of Tuscia
The Volunteer Festival in Viterbo is one of the most deeply rooted social events in northern Lazio. Promoted by the Municipality of Viterbo together with the Municipal Volunteer Council, under the patronage of the Viterbo Local Health Authority (ASL), supported by the Carivit Foundation and CSV Lazio, the festival transforms the capital of Tuscia into a great laboratory of active citizenship every year. It is not just a simple calendar of events, but a living network: dozens of local volunteer associations introduce themselves to the city, share their projects, and invite citizens to participate.
The 2026 edition, the nineteenth, took place from May 4th to 24th with an unprecedented program: 23 events and 72 associations involved, spread over three weeks. The opening on May 4th in the Sala Regia of Palazzo dei Priori featured the conference "Food that matters: national anti-waste policies and regional challenges," with the participation of Maria Chiara Gadda, author of the national law against food waste. Mid-month, the festival hosted literary meetings dedicated to disability, youth, and gender diversity, while from May 21st to 23rd, the streets of the historic center hosted the photography exhibition "25 heartbeats for Viterbo… with Love," celebrating twenty-five years of the Viterbo con Amore ODV association, active since 2001.
The most anticipated moment is the final day, Sunday, May 24th, when the Valle Faul urban park — at the foot of the Duomo hill — comes alive from dawn until dusk with "La Città a Colori". The day begins at 10:00 AM with "Volunteering on the Move," a solidarity walk through the historic center, followed by the Health Village with free medical screenings, 12 volleyball courts with over 400 children, sports and martial arts exhibitions, dance, creative workshops, dog training demonstrations, street food, and concerts on the main stage until evening.
During the festival, two historic awards are presented: the Gualtiero Fioretti Award, promoted by AMAN Odv for those who distinguish themselves in supporting cancer patients, and the Maestro Fardo Award from ADMO, which celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2026.
In a city like Viterbo, the capital of the province of the same name and the heart of Tuscia, volunteering is an essential component of the social fabric: soup kitchens and solidarity pantries, civil protection, and health and cultural associations operate year-round. The festival is the showcase that makes this daily commitment visible and returns it to the community as a shared celebration, with all events free of charge. For the Lazio Region, it is one of the main events dedicated to the third sector outside the Capital.
The 2026 edition, the nineteenth, broke all records: 23 events and 72 associations between May 4th and 24th, promoted by the City of Viterbo and the Municipal Volunteer Council under the patronage of the Viterbo Local Health Authority, with the support of the Carivit Foundation and CSV Lazio. The chosen theme, "Sharing the good, building the community," served as a common thread for conferences, literary presentations, exhibitions, and workshops in the streets and palaces of the historic center.
The opening on May 4th in the Sala Regia was dedicated to the fight against food waste with MP Maria Chiara Gadda; from May 14th to 16th, literary meetings with Claudio Chiavari, Martina Serafin, and Alec Trenta addressed disability, youth, and gender diversity; from May 21st to 23rd, the photography exhibition "25 heartbeats for Viterbo… with Love" celebrated the 25 years of the Viterbo con Amore association. Grand finale on Sunday, May 24th, at Valle Faul with "La Città a Colori," from dawn to dusk.
