The spring fair featuring flowers, Monferrato flavors, and art at the Castle
Every year, on April 25th, the village of Castell'Alfero, in the Province of Asti, dresses up in colors and scents to host ViviVerde, the historic open-air fair that weaves together nature, tradition, and taste in the heart of Monferrato. Established in the early 2000s, the event has become one of the most anticipated spring appointments in the area, drawing thousands of visitors to the streets and squares of the historic center.
From early morning until sunset, the streets of the village are filled with floriculture and nursery exhibitors, quality craft stalls, hobbyists, and local producers of honey, cheese, and wine. The heart of the fair beats between Piazza Castello and Piazza Mazzini, along Via F.lli Bechis and the narrow streets of the historic village, up to the Chiesa dei Battuti.
The food and wine offering is one of the day's highlights: the Pro Loco of Castell'Alfero, together with the Palio Committee, the Oratory, and local restaurateurs, offers a culinary journey ranging from raw beef and veal with tuna sauce in a bao bun, to agnolotti and ravioli, finanziera, and boiled meats, all paired with the great wines of the Asti hills.
For those who love to stay active, the morning kicks off with a 12 km walk through the landscapes of Monferrato, enriched by Land Art installations. In the afternoon, the equestrian show takes center stage, while the Castle and the Town Hall host photographic and heraldic exhibitions, displays by painters and ceramicists, and guided tours of the manor. There are also spaces dedicated to children, with traditional games in the Piazza dei Balocchi.
The day concludes with an evening dinner, sunset aperitifs, roving choral groups, and a DJ set that enlivens the center until late, making ViviVerde a true community celebration for the entire Asti Monferrato region.
The 25th edition of ViviVerde celebrated the silver anniversary of the event with a day packed with activities, from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM. As highlighted by Mayor Giancarlo Fasano, the event represents "the very identity of Castell'Alfero opening up to visitors."
The historic center hosted exhibitors of botany, floriculture, and crafts between Piazza Castello and Piazza Mazzini, while the day opened with the laying of a laurel wreath for Liberation Day. Among the many offerings were the 12 km walk through the Monferrato landscapes, the afternoon equestrian show with Spanish dance, and traditional games at the Microcirco of the sferisterio.
Cultural initiatives included the exhibition "Between Allegory and Heraldry," the photo contest "A Click for Castell'Alfero," displays by painters and ceramicists, and paintings created with saffron in the gardens and halls of the Castle and Town Hall.
