A community Christmas in Castri di Lecce, featuring wool-crafted trees and nativity scenes
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Vivilnatale is the Christmas celebration of Castri di Lecce, a small town in the Salento region of Puglia. Promoted by the local Pro Loco, which has organized it annually since 2006, the initiative transforms the village streets into a path of lights, decorations, and nativity scenes throughout the holiday season. This is not your typical festival with big-name performers; it is a homemade Christmas where the true stars are the patient, collective efforts of the local residents.
The symbol of Vivilnatale is the community tree, an impressive cone eight meters high and four meters wide at the base, entirely covered in colorful patchwork wool. Beside it stands the community nativity scene, also created through knitting. Both works are born from the hands of dozens of local women—around fifty in the most recent edition—who dedicate months to the project, needles and crochet hooks in hand. It is a gesture that is both artisanal and deeply affectionate, showcasing the creativity, passion, and sense of belonging of a small Salento community.
The highlight is the presentation and lighting of the tree, accompanied by Christmas carols. The day is brought to life by the ChristmasBand and students from the "A. Diaz" Comprehensive Institute, who bring music and joy to the town center. In the afternoon, the stalls open and Santa Claus arrives, ready to collect letters from the little ones. Over the years, Vivilnatale has also featured various artistic nativity scenes scattered throughout the village and a mini-nativity competition, which engages families and enthusiasts alike.
Castri di Lecce is part of the deep Salento region that, far from the spotlight, preserves an authentic way of experiencing the holidays. Vivilnatale fits into the rich Christmas calendar of the Lecce area, filled with living nativity scenes, illuminations, and markets, but it stands out for its participatory nature: here, Christmas is not bought, it is built together. For those visiting Puglia in winter, it is a chance to discover a genuine village and its warm hospitality.
Dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: as per tradition, the event will take place during the Christmas season, with details released by the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to the holidays.
