The Nativity comes to life among the ruins of the abandoned village of Romagnano al Monte

Some living nativity scenes choose a square, a cave, or a courtyard. In Romagnano al Monte, in the province of Salerno, the stage is an entire village: the ancient hamlet abandoned after the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, when residents were relocated to a new settlement nearby. Since then, the stone houses, narrow alleys, and viewpoints overlooking the Platano Valley have remained frozen in time. Every December, for a few evenings, those ruins are rekindled by hundreds of lights and torches, once again hosting voices, gestures, and crafts: this is the "Vita nel Borgo" Living Nativity.
The project was born in 2019 from the vision of a group of young locals, determined to restore meaning and tourism potential to a place that risked becoming nothing more than a ruin. The first performance, promoted by the "Luci nel Borgo" association with the support of the Bottega San Lazzaro of Salerno for costumes, took place on December 26, 2019, with about seventy performers. Since that debut, the event has grown into what the organizers call "a consolidated tradition for the community": the nativity is now the heart of the wider Vita nel Borgo initiative, supported from the start by the GAL "I Sentieri del Buon Vivere".
Along the village lanes, visitors encounter scenes of the Nativity and snapshots of daily life from the past. Performers in traditional attire bring ancient crafts to life, while local artisans and farmers offer live demonstrations and authentic products. Food and wine are also a highlight: along the route, there are tastings of local peasant dishes and flavors that tell the story of a culinary culture deeply rooted in the Salerno hinterland.
The nativity is promoted and organized by the Pro Loco of Romagnano al Monte, in collaboration with the Municipality of Romagnano al Monte, the Municipality of Buccino, the Maria SS. del Rosario Parish, and the GOPI – Civil Protection of Romagnano al Monte. In the December 2025 edition, the event was included in the shared Christmas program "Una Sola Voce", born from the collaboration between the two municipalities. It is a collective effort involving dozens of volunteers in a town with fewer than four hundred inhabitants: this spirit of participation is perhaps the true reason why it is worth coming up here.
The town sits at an altitude of about 650 meters, on the far eastern border of the province of Salerno, where Campania fades into Basilicata. Of Lombard origin, the old settlement overlooks the Platano River gorge, in a landscape of woods and ridges rarely touched by mass tourism. Nearby, you can reach the Volcei Archaeological Park in Buccino, the caves and trails of the Platano area, and the Alburni villages: the living nativity thus becomes an opportunity to discover a corner of inland Campania often ignored by guidebooks.
More than just a show, "Vita nel Borgo" is an act of memory: making people walk again through houses that the earthquake had emptied. The evening atmosphere, the silence of the valley, the torches tracing the alleys, and the warmth of a community sharing its story make this re-enactment one of the most intense of the Salerno Christmas season.
At the moment, no official announcement has been published regarding the December 2026 edition of the living nativity in Romagnano al Monte, in the province of Salerno. The event, which reached its fifth edition in 2025, usually takes place in the second half of December, with the route opening in the late afternoon among the illuminated alleys of the abandoned village.
Dates and programs are communicated each year by the Pro Loco of Romagnano al Monte, in collaboration with the Municipalities of Romagnano al Monte and Buccino, the Maria SS. del Rosario Parish, and the local GOPI – Civil Protection. Until the official publication, the information provided here is to be considered indicative and based on previous editions.
Romagnano al Monte can be reached by car from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, taking the Sicignano degli Alburni or Petina exit, then continuing along the SS 407 Basentana and provincial roads towards Buccino and the upper Platano Valley. The nearest train station is in Sicignano degli Alburni; the reference airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
The performances take place in the late afternoon and evening: in the 2025 edition, opening was set for 5:00 PM. There is no official information regarding an entrance fee: it is advisable to check with the Pro Loco before setting off.
The route winds through the alleys and ruins of the ancient village on uneven, uphill terrain: comfortable shoes and warm clothing are essential, as at 650 meters above sea level, December evenings are cold. Parking near the village is limited; it is better to arrive early.
