An allegorical float parade in the heart of a small village in the Belìce Valley
In the small town of Vita, perched among the hills of the Belìce Valley in the province of Trapani, the Carnival is one of the most anticipated events of the year. The festival centers on the parade of papier-mâché allegorical floats—monumental structures built over the preceding months by master craftsmen and numerous volunteers—which bring the streets of the historic center to life with color, music, and joy.
For several years, the Vita Carnival has been held in partnership with the nearby town of Salemi. The floats parade on two consecutive days: first through the streets of Vita and then in Salemi, creating a single, grand event that highlights the entire region. The festival is promoted by local associations, notably H700 and Liberty24, with the support of the respective municipal administrations and tourism departments. This shared format has successfully revived a popular tradition deeply cherished by both communities, bringing the allegorical floats back after years of absence.
The papier-mâché floats tackle themes ranging from current events and satire to the world of entertainment, featuring figures with great visual impact. Accompanying the parade is the historic Giardinieri mask, a symbol of the Salemi carnival, which adds to the festive atmosphere each year alongside costumed groups, music, and entertainment along the route.
In Vita, the parade winds through the town streets, starting and ending in Piazza Pirandello, crossing Via Pirandello, the Belìce Valley, and the surrounding streets of the town center. The event, with free admission, attracts families, children, and visitors from neighboring towns, transforming the small village into a colorful open-air stage.
For Vita, which has only a few thousand inhabitants, the Carnival is much more than a party: it is a moment of vitality and regional promotion, capable of drawing visitors and strengthening the sense of community. The collaboration between Vita and Salemi, two villages in the province of Trapani united by the same carnival tradition, makes this event one of the most distinctive in the winter calendar of Western Sicily.
The 2026 Vita Carnival took place on Saturday, February 21, from approximately 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with the parade of papier-mâché allegorical floats along the streets of the historic center. The event, originally scheduled for February 14, was postponed due to adverse weather conditions that would have prevented it from being held safely.
The event, promoted by the H700 and Liberty24 associations, drew hundreds of visitors from Vita, Salemi, and neighboring towns. The floats, the result of weeks of work by craftsmen and volunteers, addressed current affairs and satirical themes, accompanied by the traditional Giardinieri mask. The following day, Sunday, February 22, the parade was repeated in Salemi.
