About Vino co 'a Percoca

In Terzigno, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, the Vino co 'a Percoca Festival celebrates a simple, traditional rural custom: slices of percoca (a local yellow-fleshed peach) left to chill in a glass of local wine. Established in 1999 as part of the Saint Anthony of Padua festivities, the festival brings Piazzetta Sant'Antonio to life every June with food stalls, Vesuvius wine tastings, Neapolitan folk music, and free evening performances. It is one of the most popular local festivals in the Vesuvius area, drawing visitors from all the surrounding towns.

A festival born from a rural tradition

The Vino co 'a Percoca Festival in Terzigno, in the province of Naples, Campania, was founded in 1999 to pay homage to a domestic custom passed down through generations in Vesuvius households: the percoca, a firm, yellow-fleshed peach typical of the area, sliced and left to rest for a few minutes in a glass of wine. It is a simple summer ritual, somewhere between a dessert and a post-meal treat, known in the local dialect as ยซ'o vino co 'a percocaยป, which has become the heart of a beloved village festival.

The event has grown year after year, becoming one of the main folk gatherings on the Vesuvius side of the region, with editions in the 2000s and 2010s spanning over twenty consecutive years. Its success is due to a simple, proven formula: local products, affordable prices, free performances in the square, and direct participation from the residents.

Terzigno, a land of wine at the foot of Vesuvius

Terzigno has always been a wine-growing town. According to local historical tradition, the area of the current town was home to the Tertium Miliarium, the ยซthird mileยป, a village where many farmers and winemakers lived in Roman times, taking advantage of the extraordinary fertility of the volcanic soil to produce wine highly prized by the inhabitants of Pompeii. That vocation has never ceased: even today, the lava soils on the eastern slopes of Vesuvius produce DOC wines and grapes that ripen with a concentration difficult to find elsewhere.

Alongside viticulture, there is fruit farming: the percoca is the symbolic fruit of this belt of municipalities, grown in gardens and fields between the town and the Vesuvius National Park. Wine and percoca, therefore, are not a pairing invented for the occasion, but the two products that best represent the agricultural economy of Terzigno.

Saint Anthony of Padua: the feast that hosts the festival

The festival is not an isolated event: it was born and lives within the festivities in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua, which are celebrated on June 13th and involve the entire neighborhood around Piazzetta Sant'Antonio in Terzigno. The organization is entrusted to the Nuovo Comitato S. Antonio, the festival committee that manages both the religious and secular aspects every year, from the festive lights to the stages for the performances.

This dual nature โ€” devotional and gastronomic โ€” is typical of Southern Italy and explains the warmth of the evenings: the procession and liturgical moments coexist with wine stalls, folk music, and the concluding fireworks display.

What you will find at the festival

The program changes from year to year, but the structure of the festival has remained essentially the same since the first editions:

  • Vino co 'a percoca, served in glasses with the fruit slices submerged, the absolute star of the event;
  • food stalls with traditional Vesuvius rural dishes prepared with fresh, genuine ingredients;
  • tastings of local wines and typical regional products;
  • free evening shows featuring artists from the Neapolitan scene, including singer-songwriters, Neapolitan songs, tammurriata folk dances, and cabaret;
  • dance school performances and entertainment for all ages;
  • fireworks to close the festivities.

The atmosphere of the evenings

The evenings usually begin around 8:30 PM, when the heat fades and the square begins to fill up. The crowd is that of authentic village festivals: entire families, groups of friends, and visitors arriving from neighboring towns in the Vesuvius area and the Nola hinterland. Over the years, many names beloved by the Campanian public have graced the square in Terzigno, from folk music to cabaret, always with free admission.

Those arriving for the first time will also discover a town worth stopping for: its position on the edge of the Vesuvius National Park makes Terzigno a convenient starting point for excursions on the volcano and visits to local wineries.

When it takes place

The festival is traditionally held in June, close to the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua on June 13th, and generally spans three or four consecutive evenings. The exact dates are announced by the organizing committee a few weeks in advance, usually through social media channels and posters displayed around town.
