Salento dialect theatre on the stage of the Teatro Olmi in Latiano
The Vincenzo Alfieri Vernacular Theatre Festival is one of the most deeply rooted cultural events in Latiano, in the province of Brindisi, in the heart of the Salento region. Organised by the Pro Loco Association of Latiano, the festival reached its 36th edition in 2026: a milestone that makes it one of the longest-running dialect theatre events in the entire province. Every winter, for several weeks, the town theatre becomes a meeting point for enthusiasts, families, and curious visitors eager to rediscover the language and humour of their land.
The common thread of the festival is vernacular theatre, featuring comedies performed in the Salento dialect. These plays recount daily life, family misunderstandings, star-crossed loves, and small-town schemes, using a frank and immediate language that belongs to the collective memory. The festival is named after Vincenzo Alfieri, a figure linked to the promotion of Latiano's popular culture, and it keeps alive an art form that unites entertainment and identity.
Each evening is entrusted to a different amateur company from the towns of Salento and the nearby province of Taranto. Over the years, groups from Manduria, Leverano, Salice Salentino, Crispiano, Mesagne, Squinzano, Torre Santa Susanna, and Latiano itself have performed, bringing both original scripts and dialect adaptations of Italian comedy classics—from Eduardo De Filippo to Garinei and Giovannini—to the stage.
All performances take place at the Teatro Comunale Olmi, located at Via Giuseppe Verdi 1 in the historic centre of Latiano, just a short walk from Palazzo Imperiali. A historic local venue acquired by the Municipality in 2000 and restored in 2012, the Olmi is now a small cultural jewel hosting theatre seasons and film screenings. The formula is well-established: doors open at 7:00 PM with the curtain rising at 7:30 PM, with a schedule spread across Sundays or weekends between late January and March.
More than just a season of shows, the Vincenzo Alfieri Festival is a collective ritual that strengthens the bond between the community of Latiano and its roots. Subscription-based attendance fosters a loyal audience, while hosting companies from different towns creates a cultural network among the villages of Salento. For those visiting Puglia out of season, attending a vernacular evening at the Teatro Olmi is an authentic way to connect with the region's popular traditions.
The 36th edition of the festival, organised by the Pro Loco of Latiano, consisted of four evenings at the Teatro Comunale Olmi, with doors opening at 7:00 PM and the curtain rising at 7:30 PM. A programme entirely dedicated to vernacular theatre, featuring companies from various towns in Salento and the province of Taranto.
