Masked parades, music, and community spirit in the heart of this Neapolitan town
The Villaricca Carnival is one of the most popular events on the town's calendar. In the weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday, the municipality of Villaricca, in the province of Naples, fills with masks, music, and confetti. Rather than a monumental carnival with massive floats like Italy's most famous ones, this is an authentic neighborhood festival, built year after year by the schools, parishes, and volunteer associations that bring life to the northern metropolitan area of Naples.
The highlight is the masked parade, which winds through the main streets of Villaricca. Children, teenagers, and adults in costume march together, accompanied by music and confetti, until they reach Piazza Majone, where the festivities continue with shows and entertainment. The courtyard of the Palazzo Baronale, a historic building and one of the town's architectural landmarks, traditionally hosts the musical performances and the grand finale.
Local school classes spend weeks preparing costumes and choreography, often centered around a common theme: in recent years, subjects like peace, inclusion, and solidarity have been explored, turning the parade into an educational experience as well as a fun one.
Alongside the parade, the Villaricca Carnival has developed a second hub: the Villa Comunale on Corso Italia. Here, in the morning, activities for children and families take place, featuring entertainment, baby dance, group dances, mascot meet-and-greets, and photo booths. Local associations manage the organization, transforming the public park into a large, accessible, and barrier-free open-air playground.
The defining feature of this carnival is the network of groups that makes it possible: pro loco and associations like Idee e Concretezza, Circumcommercio, and Madre Arte, the Maria SS. dell'Arco parish, public and private schools, and third-sector organizations like the Misericordia and the National Carabinieri Association. In recent years, the event has also linked up with social and charitable projects, including collections and initiatives for children in need.
Villaricca shares a long tradition of collaboration with the neighboring town of Qualiano: in several editions, the parade has started from the Villa Comunale in Qualiano to reach the one in Villaricca, uniting the schools of both towns in a single route with marching bands, majorettes, stilt walkers, and jugglers. This inter-municipal model has helped define the identity of the carnival in this part of Campania.
Those who visit the Villaricca Carnival will find a genuine popular festival, far from the tourist circuits, where children's fun is the true focus of the day. It is also an opportunity to discover a town in the Neapolitan hinterland often overlooked by guidebooks, featuring the Palazzo Baronale, the Villa Comunale, and the gastronomic traditions of the Campanian Carnival: carnival lasagna, sanguinaccio, and chiacchiere that accompany every family celebration.
The 2026 edition of the Villaricca Carnival had its centerpiece on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the Villa Comunale on Corso Italia, with the "Carnival in the Villa" initiative: from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, the public park was transformed into a large playground for the children of the Villaricca municipality.
The morning was filled with music, entertainment, baby dance, group dances, mascot meet-and-greets, and photo sessions, in an atmosphere described by the organizers as "an explosion of joy, music, and sharing." Parallel animation activities were also carried out in the schools on Via Bologna and Via Palermo to involve students of all grades.
The initiative was promoted by the Idee e Concretezza association, in collaboration with the Misericordia di Napoli Sanitร , the National Carabinieri Association โ Calvizzano Section, and the Comunitร Amalia Fusco, as part of the Cuore in Campo project and with the patronage of the Municipality of Villaricca. Technical support, including the field, audio, and music, was provided by the ARCU Association, while entertainment was entrusted to CASPER โ I Super Eroi in Corsia.
Villaricca is located about 15 km from Naples. By car: Take the Asse Mediano or Circumvallazione Esterna, exit at Villaricca. By train: Villaricca station on the Circumflegrea/Alifana (EAV) line, connected to Naples. By bus: EAV lines from Naples and neighboring towns.
The parade crosses the central streets to Piazza Majone; children's activities are concentrated at the Villa Comunale on Corso Italia and in the courtyard of the Palazzo Baronale.
All Villaricca Carnival events are free to attend.
Arrive early: on parade days, traffic in the center is heavy and some roads are closed. Park in the outskirts and walk to the parade route.
