Villamagna DOC wine celebration in the ancient village
The Villamagna Wine Festival is a food and wine event celebrating Villamagna DOC, one of the smallest and most distinctive appellations in Abruzzo, held in the town of Villamagna in the province of Chieti. Every year at the end of June, the medieval village opens its squares and alleys for an evening entirely dedicated to local wine, turning Piazza Europa and the historic center into a large open-air tasting circuit.
At the heart of the festival are the seven wineries that make up the Villamagna DOC Producers Association: Agricosimo, Cantina Villamagna, Cascina del Colle, Palazzo Battaglini, Piandimare, Torre Zambra, and Valle Martello. The Villamagna DOC, officially recognized in 2011, produces red wines based on Montepulciano (minimum 95%) across approximately 85 hectares of vineyards, with a winemaking tradition that local sources trace back to a papal bull from 1059.
The program combines conviviality with in-depth exploration. The guided masterclasses, free upon reservation, explore red wine in a summer context; in recent editions, they have been led by wine journalist Franco Santini, alongside a session designed for the under-25 audience. Along the village streets, tasting stalls are paired with Abruzzese street food, while in Piazza Europa, the evening continues with live music, collective toasts, and, late into the night, the Night Out vinyl DJ set.
The event is promoted by the Villamagna DOC Producers Association together with the Consorzio Tutela Vini d'Abruzzo and the local Pro Loco, with the goal of raising awareness of this niche appellation and the surrounding hilly landscape. Overlooking the Chieti hills between the Foro river and the Majella mountains, Villamagna offers visitors the chance to discover the oenological identity of a small Abruzzese town that has successfully turned its wine into a reason for celebration and a tourist attraction.
The 2026 edition, the third of the event, was held on Saturday, June 27 from 6:00 PM to 11:30 PM in Piazza Europa and the streets of the village of Villamagna (CH). The protagonists were the seven wineries of the appellation — Agricosimo, Cantina Villamagna, Cascina del Colle, Palazzo Battaglini, Piandimare, Torre Zambra, and Valle Martello — with tasting stalls open from 6:30 PM.
The program included the Wine The Gap masterclass for the under-25 audience (6:15 PM, with Professor Leonardo Seghetti) and two masterclasses on red wine in summer led by journalist Franco Santini (7:30 PM and 8:45 PM). From 8:00 PM, live music, a photobooth, and toasts in Piazza Europa; from 11:00 PM, the Night Out section with a vinyl DJ set by Alessandro Piccinino.
Villamagna can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Chieti-Pescara exit) and then along the Provincial Road towards the Chieti hinterland; the provincial capital Chieti is about 15 km away. The reference railway station is Chieti, which is connected to the village by bus.
Admission to the event is free. To taste the wines, a tasting kit (glass and pouch) is available for approximately €12 in advance or €15 on-site. Masterclasses are free but have limited seating and require online booking via Eventbrite.
The evening runs from late afternoon until late at night: we recommend comfortable footwear for walking through the historic center and booking your masterclasses early, as they are very popular.
