About Villafranca Carnival

Every year between February and March, the Villafranca Carnival brings the streets and squares of Villafranca Tirrena, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, to life. Organized by the Pro Carnevale Bauso Association with the support of the local municipality, the event fills the streets with vibrant masks, costumed groups, and the highly anticipated parade of papier-mâché floats crafted by local volunteers. It is a popular, family-friendly celebration that blends entertainment, local food tastings, and the lively cultural identity of the ancient village of Bauso, now known as Villafranca Tirrena.

The Carnival of Villafranca Tirrena

The Villafranca Carnival is one of the most cherished festive events along the Tyrrhenian strip of the Metropolitan City of Messina. Held in the Municipality of Villafranca Tirrena, Sicily, it transforms the town's streets and squares into a festive stage of color, music, and joy for several days between February and March. The event is organized by the Pro Carnevale Bauso Association, a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving and celebrating local carnival traditions, with the patronage and collaboration of the municipal administration.

The Allegorical Float Parade

The heart of the festival is the majestic parade of allegorical floats, accompanied by costumed groups and school children in masks. The floats are built by volunteers using traditional papier-mâché techniques, utilizing newspaper, cardboard, fabric, and plaster casts, all with a focus on reuse and environmental sustainability. These large-scale creations stand out for their originality, creativity, and craftsmanship, enhanced by mechanical movements and multi-colored light displays that illuminate the procession during evening editions.

A Celebration for the Whole Community

Alongside the parade, the Villafranca Carnival program includes numerous events spread across the various districts and neighborhoods: town square parties, entertainment and games for children, mask parades, confetti battles, and moments dedicated to families and the elderly. There is no shortage of food and wine tastings and the essential chiacchiere, the classic carnival pastry of the period. Various local associations, community centers, and parishes collaborate to offer residents and visitors an atmosphere of authentic popular joy.

Bauso, the Ancient Village

Villafranca Tirrena, formerly known as Bauso (Bàusu in Sicilian), is a village rich in history overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, dominated by the 16th-century Cottone Castle that towers over the town center. The Carnival is part of a calendar of deeply rooted traditions, such as the ancient «Bamparizzu» rite in honor of Saint Nicholas. The carnival celebration, which reached its twentieth edition in 2023, has become an increasingly popular event for the entire Tyrrhenian community over the years.

When It Takes Place

The Villafranca Carnival is traditionally held during the carnival season, between late February and early March, with events distributed over several days leading up to Shrove Tuesday. The town squares, church plazas, and community centers host the various festival appointments.

Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: as per tradition, the Pro Carnevale Bauso Association and the Municipality are expected to bring back the allegorical float parade and town square parties between February and March.

Details for the 2026 edition of the Villafranca Carnival have not yet been made official.
