About Music Under the Stars

Every summer Friday, the panoramic terrace of Villa San Michele in Anacapri transforms into a stage suspended between the sea and the sky. This historic concert series, affectionately known as "Music Under the Stars," brings world-renowned opera singers, pianists, and ensembles to the former home of Axel Munthe, creating a cultural bridge between Italy and Sweden. From June 26 to August 14, 2026, eight evening performances combine classical music with one of the most iconic views in Campania.

Music Under the Stars on the island of Capri

The Villa San Michele Concert Series in Anacapri is one of the most enchanting musical events of the summer in Campania. Every Friday evening, as the sun sets over the Gulf of Naples, the villa's famous terrace becomes an open-air concert hall: classical music blends with the scent of the gardens and a view that stretches from the Faraglioni to Mount Vesuvius. It is no coincidence that the series is affectionately dubbed "Music Under the Stars."

Villa San Michele, the home of Axel Munthe

The venue is the extraordinary Villa San Michele, the home built by the Swedish physician and writer Axel Munthe, author of the famous The Story of San Michele. Today, the villa, with its gardens, ancient sculptures, and loggia overlooking the sea, is managed by the Swedish Foundations in Capri and is among the most visited museums in Campania. The summer series ideally continues a cultural program that also includes the Swedish Film Goes Capri festival.

The 2026 Program

The 2026 edition features eight concerts, all held on Fridays starting at 8:00 PM, from June 26 to August 14:

  • June 26 — Soprano Sigrid Vetleseter Bøe, bass Erik Rosenius, and pianist Hedda Hansen Berg pay tribute to Puccini, Mozart, and Verdi.
  • July 3 — "From Carmen to Sinatra," a journey from Bizet to Weill with crooner Niklas Gabrielsson, mezzo-soprano Elisabet Jansson, accordionist Albin Grahn, pianist Astri Aareskjöld, and double bassist Ulric Johansson.
  • July 10 — Pianist Magnus Svensson accompanies tenor Daniel Johansson in a tribute to Umberto Giordano, Francesco Cilea, and Giacomo Puccini.
  • July 17 — Soprano Clarice Granado and pianist John Nalan, moving from Italian opera by Puccini to French refinement by Gounod and the jazz-inflected works of Gershwin.
  • July 24 — The vocal group Rhapsody, directed by Johan Schinkler, in an a cappella program featuring Bach, Saint-Saëns, and Kern.
  • July 31 — Violinist Rino Yoshimoto, accompanied by pianist Sergei Redkin, performing works by Walton and Paganini.
  • August 7 — Pianist and conductor Nicole Brancale performing Chopin, Ravel, Rachmaninov, and Liszt.
  • August 14 — Closing night featuring pianist Antonino Caracò, with music by Ennio Morricone, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Luigi Dallapiccola, and Nino Rota.

A bridge between Italy and Sweden

Musical consulting is provided by Bo Löfvendahl, and the series is supported by Progetto Piano and the patronage of the Embassy of Sweden in Italy. The program thus unites Scandinavian performers and great Italian composers, confirming the international vocation that has characterized Villa San Michele since its foundation.

Anacapri and Campania

The town of Anacapri, perched on the upper part of the island of Capri, in the Province of Naples and the Campania Region, provides a unique setting for the series. Attending a concert on the terrace at sunset, with the horizon turning pink and the first stars appearing over the gulf, is an experience that weaves together music, landscape, and historical memory: one of the most elegant ways to spend a summer evening in Campania.

Music Under the Stars — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Villa San Michele concert series brings eight evening concerts to Anacapri, all on Fridays at 8:00 PM, from June 26 to August 14. On the stage of the panoramic terrace, sopranos, tenors, pianists, a violinist, and a vocal ensemble alternate, ranging from great Italian opera to classical repertoire and film scores, in a continuous dialogue between Italian and Scandinavian performers.
