Great open-air cinema in the Corte dell'Arte at FOQUS, in the Quartieri Spagnoli of Naples
Estate a Corte is the open-air film festival that brings the Corte dell'Arte at FOQUS to life every summer. FOQUS is the Quartieri Spagnoli Foundation based on Via Portacarrese a Montecalvario, in the city of Naples, Campania. For over two months, the inner courtyard of the former Montecalvario institute becomes an evening arena where the audience sits outdoors, with the screen framed by the neighborhood's buildings and the light from windows overlooking the court. It is one of the most successful formulas of the Neapolitan cultural summer: quality cinema at popular prices in a place that serves as an educational and social hub during the day.
The artistic direction is entrusted to Pietro Pizzimento, who builds a program each year that balances major international titles with experimental Italian cinema. The schedule alternates between auteur works, documentaries, restored films, previews, and award-winning titles from major festivals, with some screenings in the original language with subtitles. It is not a classic summer arena for commercial reruns, but a true festival with a recognizable editorial line that guides the viewer through the entire recently concluded film season.
The hallmark of Estate a Corte is the meetings with guests: directors, actors, screenwriters, and authors take the stage before or after the screening to engage with the audience. These informal, often well-attended moments transform the evening into an opportunity for deeper insight. The festival also features book presentations dedicated to cinema and events organized in collaboration with the Cinema course at the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples.
FOQUS is not just an event venue: it is a foundation that has been working in the Quartieri Spagnoli for years with schools, workshops, educational services, and community activities. Estate a Corte was born from this vocation and is produced in collaboration with CasaZen and the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Regione Campania - Film Commission. The result is a festival that brings auteur cinema to a working-class neighborhood in the historic center, just a stone's throw from Via Toledo, and has established itself over the years as a landmark of the Neapolitan summer.
For those visiting Naples between late June and early September, Estate a Corte is a different way to experience the metropolitan city: you arrive on foot from the Toledo metro station, walk through the maze of alleys in the Quartieri Spagnoli, and enter an unexpectedly spacious and quiet area. The combination of the program, the affordable ticket price, and the atmosphere of the courtyard makes this festival one of the most authentic experiences of the Campanian summer, appreciated by both locals and visitors alike.
From June 30 to September 13, 2026, the Corte dell'Arte at FOQUS returns to transform into an open-air cinema arena. The program, curated by Pietro Pizzimento, brings together the most significant titles from the recently concluded season, auteur works, documentaries, restored classics, previews, and award-winning films from major international festivals. Several evenings are accompanied by guests who engage in dialogue with the audience.
The festival is produced by FOQUS in collaboration with CasaZen and the Cinema course at the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Regione Campania - Film Commission.
