The great Tuscan classic of speed down racing on the Pizzorne Plateau
Every year, the scenic roads of the Pizzorne Plateau, above the village of Villa Basilica (province of Lucca, Tuscany), transform into a natural circuit for one of the most spectacular competitions in the Tuscan calendar: the Soapbox Derby, a thrilling speed down race. This discipline involves two, three, or four-wheeled motorless vehicles descending a course powered solely by gravity.
Speed down racing has its roots in the old custom of hand-built wooden carts, but it has since evolved into a regulated sport. Vehicles range from traditional regional carts to modern fiberglass fairings and even karts with their engines removed. The Villa Basilica track measures approximately 1.8 km, and drivers can reach top speeds of around 80 km/h, navigating curves and hairpins that require steady nerves, balance, and precise steering.
The event spans an entire weekend and serves as a stage for the national speed down championship. Saturday is dedicated to driver registration, practice, and the first timed heats, while Sunday continues with further practice and the decisive heats that determine the final standings. It is an event that attracts enthusiasts and curious onlookers from across Tuscany and beyond, set against a backdrop of popular festivities and healthy sporting competition.
The Soapbox Derby is more than just a sport; it is a moment of gathering for the entire Municipality of Villa Basilica. Organized by ASD Pariana, which also hosts the Saturday evening convivial dinner, the event involves the plateau's hamlets, including Pariana. Admission is completely free for the public, who can find spots along the course to admire the descent of the carts in the natural setting typical of the Lucca hills.
The 2026 Soapbox Derby returns to the Pizzorne Plateau in Villa Basilica (Lucca) on the weekend of June 20-21, 2026. Along the 1.8 km track, drivers challenge gravity with their motorless carts, reaching top speeds near 80 km/h. The event is valid for the national speed down championship and is free for spectators.
The final ranking is determined by the sum of the best timed heats. The race is valid for the national speed down championship.
Villa Basilica is located in the province of Lucca, Tuscany. To reach the Pizzorne Plateau during the race days, alternative traffic routes are provided: you can ascend from the Matraia side (Capannori) or from Pariana (Villa Basilica). By car, arrive from Lucca or Pescia by following the signs for Pizzorne.
Admission is free for the public. The race takes place over two days, with practice and timed heats running from morning until evening.
