Four days to think about the present

vicino/lontano is one of the most important Italian festivals dedicated to contemporary thought. For over twenty years, every spring, it has filled the squares, theaters, and historic buildings of Udine with discussions, lectures, meetings, exhibitions, shows, and screenings, fostering dialogue between Italian and international scholars, writers, artists, and journalists. The 22nd edition takes place from May 7 to 10, 2026, with previews starting April 30.

'Breath', the keyword for 2026

Each year, the festival chooses a keyword that serves as a common thread throughout the program. For 2026, it is 'Breath': an evocative concept capable of bringing together reflections on the environment, health, freedom, time, and relationships. Over 80 events with more than 200 protagonists from the worlds of science, literature, art, performance, and information are organized around this word.

The Terzani Prize

The identity core of vicino/lontano is the Tiziano Terzani International Literary Prize, dedicated to the great Florentine journalist and writer. It is awarded to works that embody Terzani's spirit of openness, dialogue, and understanding between cultures. The award ceremony is one of the most anticipated moments of the entire festival.

A widespread and free festival

Promoted by the vicino/lontano Association with the support of the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Municipality of Udine, the Friuli Foundation, and numerous local partners, the festival enjoys the high patronage of the European Parliament. Events are held in the most beautiful locations in Udine's historic center, and admission is free: a valuable opportunity for those who want to combine the discovery of the city with days of culture and discussion.
