The historic Neapolitan antique market between the Villa Comunale and the sea

In the city of Naples, the capital of the Metropolitan City of the same name and the Campania region, Viale Dohrn has been synonymous with antiques for decades. The short, tree-lined avenue that runs alongside the Villa Comunale and leads to Via Caracciolo, in the heart of the Chiaia district, transforms on weekends into a long promenade of stalls overlooking the gulf. It is one of the city's most evocative spots: on one side, the 19th-century greenery of the Villa; on the other, the sea and the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius.
This is not a general market: it is a destination for collectors, interior designers, curious onlookers, and passersby who love to browse through objects of the past. The selection, which has expanded over the years, includes:
The roots of the event go back to the Bourbon 18th century. It was precisely to host the Festa della Fiera, which had been held annually in Naples during the summer months since 1738, that the Villa Reale—the current Villa Comunale—was inaugurated on July 11, 1781, on the Chiaia coastline. Later iconographic evidence, such as an 1836 lithograph, already shows antique dealers and second-hand sellers permanently present in the Villa Reale area. Since then, despite various ups and downs, the event has never truly left this stretch of the waterfront, becoming the antique fair par excellence for generations of Neapolitans.
For over twenty-five years, the event was organized by the Fiera Antiquaria Napoletana Cultural Association, which expanded its offerings to include sections dedicated to mid-century modern items, collectibles, and Neapolitan crafts, held on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month, from early morning to early afternoon. However, the association announced the suspension of the fair on Viale Dohrn, without providing a confirmed date for its resumption to date; in the meantime, it has shifted part of its activities to other events in the Phlegraean and Vesuvius areas.
The void left by the suspension was filled in the autumn of 2025, when the La terra del Sole association brought the stalls back to Viale Dohrn with a new Art, Antique and Vintage Fair. Since the end of September 2025, the event has taken place on Saturday and Sunday mornings along the ancient Real Passeggio di Chiaia, reviving the spirit of the historic fair: a free, open-air market where the value lies as much in the goods as in the urban setting.
A visit to the market naturally combines with a stroll through the neighborhood. Just a few meters away, you will find the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station with its historic aquarium, the Cottrau Bandstand in the Villa Comunale, the pedestrian waterfront of Via Caracciolo, and, heading inland, the shopping streets and antique shops of Chiaia—Via dei Mille, Via Filangieri, Via Domenico Morelli—where Neapolitan collecting has its permanent homes. It is an itinerary that perfectly captures the city's character: popular markets and high culture coexist on the same block.
At the time of writing, no official dates have been published for the 2026 art, antique, and vintage fair on Viale Dohrn in Naples. The situation is twofold: on one hand, the Fiera Antiquaria Napoletana Cultural Association, the historic organizer of the event, states on its website that the fair on Viale Dohrn is not taking place and that it is not yet able to indicate a resumption date; on the other hand, the La terra del Sole association, which reactivated the market on weekend mornings between late September and November 2025, has not released a program for the current year.
Those wishing to visit the market are therefore invited to contact the organizers or check local information pages before setting off. This page will be updated as soon as confirmed dates are published.
