South of the South… of the Saints: musical itineraries at sunset in the Capo di Leuca
At the southernmost point of Puglia, where the Salento narrows towards Santa Maria di Leuca, the small town of Patù (Province of Lecce) guards one of the most evocative and lesser-known places in the region: the hill of Vereto, site of the ancient Messapian city. It is here, among the ruins and the church of the Madonna di Vereto, that Vespri a Vereto. Al Sud del Sud… dei Santi (Vespers at Vereto: South of the South… of the Saints) comes to life every late spring, a festival of musical itineraries at sunset.
The format is that of a widespread festival: guided tours and excursions between Patù and Morciano di Leuca, immersive theatrical experiences in the archaeological area, and, at sunset, concerts of folk, popular, and Mediterranean music. On the natural stage of the hill, the harp, songs from Terra d'Otranto, pizzica from the Capo di Leuca, and rebetiko sounds alternate in a continuous dialogue between Salento tradition and the sounds of the entire Mediterranean.
The festival is the heart of Storie Meridiane, a cultural and social regeneration project promoted by the municipalities of Patù and Morciano di Leuca and funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU and the Ministry of Culture as part of the PNRR. The goal is to counter the depopulation of the Capo di Leuca through sustainable tourism that combines music, theater, archaeology, and food and wine. The organization is managed by Archeorete del Mediterraneo APS.
Alongside the concerts, the Vespri offer a cycle of meetings with anthropologists and scholars of the South: from the reflection "Bene dire il Sud" by Piergiorgio Giacchè to the cult of the summer saints recounted by Eugenio Imbriani, up to the "San Paolo dei serpenti" by Vincenzo Santoro, which connects the Pauline devotion of Salento to that widespread throughout the Mediterranean.
Vereto was one of the most important Messapian cities of the Capo di Leuca, now the subject of new archaeological excavation campaigns. Experiencing Vespri a Vereto means combining the listening of great traditional music with the discovery of an ancient heritage, in the silence of the Salento sunsets: an authentic experience, far from mass tourism, in the municipality of Patù, at the southern end of the Province of Lecce.
The first edition of Vespri a Vereto, promoted as part of the PNRR project "Storie Meridiane" by the municipalities of Patù and Morciano di Leuca, enlivened the Capo di Leuca from May 9 to June 27, 2026. Each sunset concert, curated by Archeorete del Mediterraneo APS, was preceded by guided tours and excursions among the ruins of the ancient Messapian city of Vereto.
The musical program ranged from the songs of Terra d'Otranto by Roberto Licci to the pizzica of the Cantori del Capo, from the Antonio Castrignanò trio to the rebetiko sounds of the Evi Evan Quartet, with the Folk Festival in Piazza Indipendenza on June 13. To conclude, between June 21 and 26, a cycle of cultural meetings with Piergiorgio Giacchè, Eugenio Imbriani, and Vincenzo Santoro.
Each appointment was preceded by guided tours and excursions between Patù and Morciano di Leuca, with immersive theatrical experiences in the archaeological area.
Patù is located at the southern end of Salento, in the Province of Lecce, a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca. By car, it can be reached via the SS275 to Leuca and then the provincial roads to Patù. The nearest train station is Gagliano-Leuca (Ferrovie del Sud Est line).
The concerts are held outdoors at sunset: bring comfortable shoes for walks in the archaeological area and, for guided tours, check booking availability at the infopoints.
