About Vertical Transhumance

Vertical Transhumance is an experiential hike held every summer in Arsita, a small village in the Teramo area at the foot of the Gran Sasso, bringing one of Abruzzo's oldest pastoral traditions back to life. Starting at dawn from the Belvedere, participants trek with the flock toward the high-altitude pastures, symbolically becoming shepherds for a day amidst traditional songs, the 'sdijuno' breakfast, a shepherd's lunch, and pastoral art workshops. An immersive experience in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.

A millenary tradition revived in Arsita

Vertical Transhumance is an experiential hiking event held in Arsita, a mountain village in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, nestled at the foot of the Gran Sasso d'Italia. The event reinterprets the ancient rite of transhumance—the traditional practice of moving flocks from valley pastures to high-altitude grazing grounds—transforming it into a collective hike open to walkers and curious visitors who, for one day, become shepherds for a day.

The route and the day's stages

The day begins at dawn: the first meeting point is at the Arsita Belvedere, from where participants reach the starting point known as "Stella Alpina." From here, the flock begins its ascent toward the high pastures. A second meeting point is scheduled at Fonte della Creta, in the Rigopiano area, for those wishing to join later. The path winds through evocative mountain landscapes, accompanied by the songs and sounds of local pastoral tradition, until reaching the pastures near the Rifugio Fonte Torricella.

Flavors and rites of pastoral culture

Gastronomy is an integral part of the experience. At Fonte della Creta, participants share the sdijuno, the traditional hearty breakfast of the transhumance. At the pastures, the shepherd's lunch is served, featuring traditional Abruzzese dishes such as pallotte cacio e ov (cheese and egg balls), chitarra alla bacucchese pasta, and above all, coatto—a mutton stew slow-cooked with tomatoes and aromatic herbs that encapsulates centuries of mountain peasant cuisine, accompanied by wine and beer.

Nature, memory, and community

In the afternoon, a pastoral art workshop is held, offering a chance to discover the secrets of an ancient craft. The initiative, organized by the Pro Loco of Arsita and Masserie del Parco with the patronage of the Municipality of Arsita, combines hiking, historical memory, and the promotion of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It is an experience designed for families, mountain enthusiasts, and anyone wishing to rediscover the deep bond between man, the flock, and the land of Abruzzo.

Useful information

Participation requires mandatory booking in the days leading up to the event for organizational reasons. As this is a hike in a mountain environment, appropriate trekking clothing and footwear are recommended.
