The vertical race from Bresimo to the summit of Monte Pin, in the heart of the Maddalene mountains
The Vertical Pin is one of the most evocative mountain running races in western Trentino. It is a vertical, meaning a pure uphill race: just five kilometers, but with 1,390 meters of elevation gain that participants tackle in one go. The start is in the center of the small Municipality of Bresimo (at an altitude of about 1,030 meters), in the picturesque Val di Non, in the province of Trento; the finish line is at the summit of Monte Pin, at 2,420 meters, one of the panoramic balconies of the Maddalene mountain group, on the border between Trentino and South Tyrol.
The route winds along hiking-type mountain trails (E), with short sections reserved for expert hikers (EE). The gradient is constant and severe: good physical preparation is required, as is maximum caution on the more technical and steep sections. There is a single refreshment point along the route, located halfway up the climb. The descent, for those who wish to return on foot, follows the SAT 131 trail.
The first edition—the "zero" edition—took place in May 2016, with over 180 participants at the start, and since then the race has become a fixed late-spring appointment for skyrunning enthusiasts. The race is part of the Maddalene Sky Marathon circuit, the premier running event in the area, and is organized by the A.S.D. Maddalene Sky Marathon, based at the Maddalene tourist office in Rumo, together with the volunteers of the Pro Loco of Bresimo.
Vertical Pin is not just a sporting challenge. It is an opportunity to discover a little-known and still authentic corner of Trentino, amidst woods, mountain huts, and panoramas that sweep across the Brenta Dolomites and the surrounding valleys. The day concludes with a convivial moment involving athletes, supporters, and spectators: a community lunch in the multipurpose hall and the awards ceremony, in the true spirit of a village festival. An event that combines mountain sports with the popular traditions of the Bresimo community and the Trentino-South Tyrol region.
The seventh edition of the Vertical Pin took place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Bresimo, in the Val di Non, with 105 participants at the start. The sunny day and excellent course conditions favored two record-breaking performances.
Among the men, Davide Magnini dominated, crossing the finish line at the summit of Monte Pin in 49'50", setting a new course record. Behind him were Alex Rigo (52'43") and Simone Costa (54'08"). In the women's event, victory and a new record went to Anna Lena Hofer, from Merano, in 1h06'43", ahead of Heidi Pfeifer (1h07'06") and Edeltraud Thaler (1h11'32"). Fabrizio Zappini won the under-18 category.
In case of bad weather, the race was postponed to Sunday, May 31. A single refreshment point was provided halfway through the course; descent along the SAT 131 trail.
Men's podium: 1. Davide Magnini 49'50" (record) — 2. Alex Rigo 52'43" — 3. Simone Costa 54'08".
Women's podium: 1. Anna Lena Hofer 1h06'43" (record) — 2. Heidi Pfeifer 1h07'06" — 3. Edeltraud Thaler 1h11'32".
Bresimo is located in Val di Non, about 40 km northwest of Trento. By car, it can be reached from the SS43 Val di Non road, exiting towards Cis-Livo-Bresimo. The nearest train station is on the Trento-Malè-Marilleva line (Cis or Malè stop), from where you can continue by car or local bus.
For participants aged 13 and over, a competitive medical certificate is required; for minors, parental consent is mandatory. Bib collection from 7:30 AM in the center of Bresimo, start at 9:00 AM.
Given the gradient and technical sections, trail shoes, layered clothing, and maximum caution are recommended. In case of bad weather, the race may be moved to the following day.
