About Varese Ligure Carnival

The Varese Ligure Carnival colors the Borgo Rotondo with the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups. Organized by the Pro Loco, it is a festival designed for families, with entertainment, inflatables, games, and the traditional 'pentolaccia' (piรฑata) that concludes the afternoon. In case of bad weather, activities move indoors. A cheerful event that enlivens one of the most picturesque villages in the Val di Vara, in the province of La Spezia, awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club.

Carnival in the Round Village

The Varese Ligure Carnival is the festival that brings color and joy to the heart of the upper Val di Vara, in the province of La Spezia. Organized by the Pro Loco Varese Ligure, it takes place in the famous Borgo Rotondo, a rare example of circular medieval architecture and one of the most characteristic villages in Liguria.

Parade and Masks

The heart of the day is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, which winds through the village streets amidst music and confetti. It is a festival designed especially for children, with games, entertainment, and inflatables that transform the village into a large space for family fun.

The 'Pentolaccia' and Tradition

The traditional 'pentolaccia', a carnival game deeply cherished in Ligurian communities, concludes the afternoon. Food stalls offering popcorn and drinks accompany the festivities. In case of bad weather, the events are held indoors to ensure the show goes on. The Pro Loco also offers the possibility to rent carnival costumes.

A Festival Involving the Hamlets

The Varese carnival is not limited to the main town: the same Pro Loco organizes a twin event in the hamlet of San Pietro Vara, a sign of a widespread carnival tradition that involves the entire valley. Participating means experiencing the winter of Val di Vara in its most festive and communal dimension.
