The mountain potato of the Alta Val Trebbia, with handmade gnocchi and autumn flavours
The Potato Festival is the autumn event in Rovegno, a municipality in the Alta Val Trebbia in the Metropolitan City of Genoa, on the border with Emilia and Piedmont. The star is the high-altitude potato, which thanks to the climate and soil of the valley has a firm texture, delicate flavour and excellent cooking results.
With over fifty years of history, the festival is one of the most deeply rooted peasant festivals in the Ligurian Apennines and is included in the calendar of Authentic Ligurian Events of the Liguria Region.
The heart of the festival is the food: handmade gnocchi with flavourful sauces, roast and fried potatoes, savoury pies, soups and the famous mountain brandacujun, the local version of the dish made with potatoes and stockfish. Alongside the flavours, the festival offers:
Rovegno is one of the pearls of the Alta Val Trebbia, the valley that the poet Ezra Pound called 'the most beautiful in the world': a land of crystal-clear waters, woods and ancient mills, ideal for an autumn trip to discover the flavours and landscapes of the Ligurian Apennines.
The 2026 edition confirms the event in Rovegno dedicated to the mountain potato, on the first weekend of October. The festival is part of the Authentic Ligurian Events 2026 calendar of the Liguria Region.
The detailed programme, with the times of the stalls and shows, will be released by the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the festival. The exact dates may vary slightly: it is advisable to check before travelling.
Rovegno can be reached by car from Genoa along the SS45 of the Val Trebbia (about an hour). It is not served by train; alternatively, bus services run to the upper valley.
Free admission. Food stalls are paid.
