About Valle Gesso Carnival

The Valle Gesso Carnival is the grand travelling festival of the Gesso Valley in the Cuneo area. Every year, the community crafts unique handmade masks, costumes, and floats based on a new theme, parading through the streets of Entracque, down into Cuneo, and back to the valley villages of Andonno and Valdieri. It is a popular, family-friendly celebration that unites the valley's hamlets in a single, vibrant parade, blending modern carnival joy with ancient local Alpine traditions.

The Carnival that unites the villages of Valle Gesso

The Valle Gesso Carnival is the major festival that brings the Valle Gesso to life every year. Nestled at the foot of the Maritime Alps in the municipality of Entracque (Province of Cuneo, Piedmont), it is one of the most picturesque valleys in the region. This is not just a local village festival; it is a travelling event that connects the valley's hamlets, bringing them together to parade through their own streets and into the heart of the provincial capital, Cuneo.

The stars of the show are the masks, costumes, and allegorical floats, all patiently handmade by residents in the months leading up to the event. Each edition revolves around a theme chosen by the community, ranging from tributes to local productsโ€”like the famous Valle Gesso potatoโ€”to topical social issues.

A community tradition

At the heart of the festival lies the teamwork of the valley's villages. Organized by the pastoral unit of Entracque, Valdieri, and Roaschia in collaboration with the local municipalities, the event involves the entire population. Children, young people, and the elderly parade side by side, embodying the spirit of sharing that is the true essence of the celebration.

The Valle Gesso Carnival coexists with another precious local tradition: the Segale Bear Alpine Carnival of Valdieri, an ancient seasonal rite where a bear made entirely of rye straw announces the end of winter. Together, they represent the two souls of the Valle Gesso Carnival: the festive, popular spirit of the floats and the archaic, ritualistic nature of the Alpine masks.

What to expect

  • Allegorical float parades and masked groups through village streets
  • A different theme each year, with costumes and sets crafted by the community
  • The grand parade in the center of Cuneo, where the valley showcases its spirit to the city
  • Awards for the best costumes and floats
  • A family-friendly atmosphere suitable for all ages

An authentic day of celebration, far from the typical tourist carnivals, where the Valle Gesso and its villages proudly display their identity and community pride.

Valle Gesso Carnival โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Valle Gesso Carnival featured the theme "The Olympics". Parades took place over three days across the Valle Gesso villages and Cuneo, featuring masks, costumes, and allegorical floats crafted by the community in tribute to the world of sports and the Games.

For the 2026 edition, the Valle Gesso Carnival chose "The Olympics" as its theme, expressed through costumes, masks, and allegorical floats dedicated to sports and the Olympic Games. The festival once again united the villages of the Valle Gesso in a travelling parade that visited the valley towns and the center of Cuneo. The creation of the sets and costumes was the result of the community's collective work, guided by the pastoral unit and the valley's municipalities.
