The travelling carnival of the Valle Gesso, spanning Entracque, Cuneo, Andonno, and Valdieri
The Valle Gesso Carnival is the major festival that brings the Valle Gesso to life every year. Nestled at the foot of the Maritime Alps in the municipality of Entracque (Province of Cuneo, Piedmont), it is one of the most picturesque valleys in the region. This is not just a local village festival; it is a travelling event that connects the valley's hamlets, bringing them together to parade through their own streets and into the heart of the provincial capital, Cuneo.
The stars of the show are the masks, costumes, and allegorical floats, all patiently handmade by residents in the months leading up to the event. Each edition revolves around a theme chosen by the community, ranging from tributes to local productsโlike the famous Valle Gesso potatoโto topical social issues.
At the heart of the festival lies the teamwork of the valley's villages. Organized by the pastoral unit of Entracque, Valdieri, and Roaschia in collaboration with the local municipalities, the event involves the entire population. Children, young people, and the elderly parade side by side, embodying the spirit of sharing that is the true essence of the celebration.
The Valle Gesso Carnival coexists with another precious local tradition: the Segale Bear Alpine Carnival of Valdieri, an ancient seasonal rite where a bear made entirely of rye straw announces the end of winter. Together, they represent the two souls of the Valle Gesso Carnival: the festive, popular spirit of the floats and the archaic, ritualistic nature of the Alpine masks.
An authentic day of celebration, far from the typical tourist carnivals, where the Valle Gesso and its villages proudly display their identity and community pride.
For the 2026 edition, the Valle Gesso Carnival chose "The Olympics" as its theme, expressed through costumes, masks, and allegorical floats dedicated to sports and the Olympic Games. The festival once again united the villages of the Valle Gesso in a travelling parade that visited the valley towns and the center of Cuneo. The creation of the sets and costumes was the result of the community's collective work, guided by the pastoral unit and the valley's municipalities.
Entracque can be reached by car from Cuneo by following signs for Valle Gesso (approximately 25 km). Parades take place in the streets and squares of the valley village centers (Entracque, Andonno, Valdieri) and in the center of Cuneo.
The Valle Gesso Carnival takes place during the carnival season, between February and March, with parades held over several days across the different valley villages and in Cuneo, typically starting at 2:30 PM.
The parades take place in public streets and squares; access is free of charge.
Dress warmly: temperatures in the valley can be quite cold at the end of winter. We recommend arriving early to secure a good spot along the parade route.
