Great auteur cinema in the medieval village of Montone
The Umbria Film Festival is one of the most beloved film festivals in central Italy. Founded in 1997, it takes place every July in the medieval village of Montone, in the province of Perugia, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The visionary director Terry Gilliam (Monty Python, Brazil), honorary president and honorary citizen of the town, is one of the driving forces behind the festival, along with the association, the Municipality of Montone, and Riverside Studios.
Over the years, the festival has presented over a hundred previews, five hundred short films, and hosted more than fifty protagonists of international cinema. The evenings begin with animated short films for children and continue with preview feature films, classics, and auteur films, screened outdoors in the squares and streets of Montone. Alongside the screenings, the program includes exhibitions, debates, round tables, masterclasses, concerts, and meetings with guests.
Among the festival's rituals is the ceremony where the mayor presents the keys to the city to the most distinguished guests. The Umbria Film Festival is now an event that combines the magic of the big screen with the beauty of a medieval village, attracting cinephiles from all over Italy and abroad.
The 2026 edition of the Umbria Film Festival is expected in Montone in July, as per tradition consolidated since 1997. The festival will once again offer its formula of open-air screenings, previews, short films, classics, masterclasses, and meetings with international cinema guests.
