The Easter meeting between the Madonna and the Risen Christ in the heart of the Nebrodi village

In Pettineo, a village in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina overlooking the valley of the ancient Halaesa, Easter morning is the most anticipated moment of the year. In the local Sicilian dialect, it is called "u scuontru" (the encounter): in the town's main square, the statues of the Madonna and the Risen Christ, carried on shoulders through the village streets, meet until the climactic moment of the symbolic embrace between the Mother and her risen Son, greeted by the applause of all the citizens present.
The Easter encounter is a ritual found in many towns across Sicily, where it takes on different names—'ncontru, scontru, giunta—but everywhere it retains the same meaning: the joy of the Resurrection that dissolves the mourning of the Passion. In Pettineo, the performance takes place in the heart of the town and involves the entire community, in an alternation of anticipation, silence, and celebration that makes this the most attended moment of the local Holy Week.
Pettineo is a small municipality in the province of Messina, in the Nebrodi area, which guards numerous religious and popular traditions. Its patron saint is Saint Oliva, celebrated on May 5th with the evocative "vutata di l'Altari" and the procession of the statue on a majestic float, while in August the Feast of Maria SS. della Pietà and the Lemon Festival in Seccagno, dedicated to the typical local product, are celebrated. Among all these recurrences, the Easter scuontru remains the identity ritual par excellence, drawing both locals and emigrants who have returned to the town for the occasion to the square.
More than a spectacle, the scuontru is an act of faith and belonging. The square fills with the faithful, confraternities and bearers accompany the statues, and the meeting between the Madonna and the Risen Christ becomes an opportunity to reunite, exchange Easter greetings, and relive together a ritual that has been passed down for generations in this corner of Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Pettineo scuontru will be held, as per tradition, on the morning of Easter Sunday in the town's main square, in the province of Messina. Official dates and details for 2026 have not yet been announced at the time of writing.
The ritual follows the same pattern every year: the processions of the statues of the Madonna and the Risen Christ pass through the village streets and converge in the square, where the meeting between the Mother and her risen Son takes place, greeted by the applause of the faithful. To find out the times and details for the 2026 edition, it is recommended to follow the channels of the parish and the Municipality of Pettineo.
