About Living Nativity

Every January 6th, for the Epiphany, the small village of Turrivalignani (Pescara) transforms into an Abruzzo Bethlehem. In Piazza Umberto I, over a hundred costumed actors bring the Nativity to life, surrounded by ancient crafts, scenes of rural life, and the magical anticipation of the Befana's arrival. A traditional, free-admission event that unites the entire community of this village perched on the characteristic sandstone cliffs of the Pescara Valley.

A living nativity for the Epiphany in Turrivalignani

The Turrivalignani Living Nativity is the most cherished Christmas event in this small town in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo. Every year, on the occasion of the Epiphany, the historic center of the village comes alive with the representation of the Nativity: over a hundred actors in period costumes recreate the scene of Jesus' birth and the life of a village from two thousand years ago, featuring shepherds, artisans, and traditional trades.

Piazza Umberto I and the arrival of the Befana

The heart of the event is Piazza Umberto I, where the sacred performance is concentrated. The afternoon of January 6th begins with the highly anticipated arrival of the Befana around 3:30 PM, a moment particularly loved by children, followed by the staging of the living nativity. The entire village becomes an open-air stage, with its narrow streets and houses serving as a natural backdrop.

The village of cliffs and raw earth houses

Turrivalignani stands at an altitude of 312 meters on a sandstone ridge overlooking the Pescara Valley, surrounded by the profiles of the Majella, Gran Sasso, and Morrone mountains. Around the town, rain and erosion have carved out the evocative badlands known as the Turrivalignani cliffs over the millennia, a site of community interest. The village also preserves dozens of ancient raw earth houses, a rare testament to rural architecture that has almost disappeared in the Pescara Valley: an exceptional setting for a re-enactment rooted in the local rural identity.

A community tradition

Organized with the involvement of the entire community and the patronage of the Municipality of Turrivalignani, the living nativity has grown over time to become a fixed appointment on the Abruzzo Epiphany calendar, with over twenty editions held. Participation is free, and the event attracts visitors from neighboring towns in the Pescara Valley, eager to experience an authentic atmosphere far from the major tourist circuits.

The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the event is traditionally held on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany.
