Pianello Sparkling: the grand finale of the Valtidone Wine Fest celebrating Gutturnio
The stop in Pianello Val Tidone, in the heart of the province of Piacenza, is the last of the four Sundays of the Valtidone Wine Fest, the largest wine event in the Piacenza area. Here, the event is named "Pianello Frizzante", in homage to the "mossi" (sparkling) wines of the Colli Piacentini, which find their most festive celebration in this village, concluding a September entirely dedicated to the valley's wine. It's the moment when this corner of Emilia-Romagna, overlooking the first Apennine hills bordering the Pavia area, toasts the territory and its wineries.
The absolute protagonists of the day are the sparkling wines of the Colli Piacentini, with Gutturnio — the king of Piacenza reds — in the spotlight, alongside the sparkling versions of Bonarda, Malvasia, and Ortrugo. In Piazza Madonna and along the streets of the center, tasting stands are set up by about twenty wineries and producers from Val Tidone, joined by a dozen artisans and producers of specialties. Tastings accompany visitors throughout the day, on a journey of taste that tells the story of the valley's oenological identity.
The wine is paired with typical products of the Piacenza tradition: batarò, the typical bread-dough focaccia cooked between two plates, cotechino and local DOP cured meats, honey, and truffles from the valley, along with local dishes offered by the Pro Loco stands. A showcase of authentic flavors that makes Pianello Frizzante a true popular festival as well as an oenological one.
The Wine Fest stop intertwines with the patronal feast of San Maurizio, which enlivens Pianello with a rich program of tradition and entertainment. The day is marked by performances by the flag-wavers of Cerreto Guidi and the bersaglieri brass band of Melzo, by markets in the historic center, the artisan fair, and, in recent editions, fireworks that light up the night. A combination of wine culture, popular devotion, and village festival that attracts visitors from all over the province.
Promoted by the Municipality of Pianello Val Tidone together with the Pro Loco and the organization of the Valtidone Wine Fest, and included in the territorial project "Welcome Val Tidone" which unites five municipalities in the valley, the Pianello stop is the grand finale of a review that enhances the wineries, typical products, and the food and wine identity of the Piacenza Val Tidone. A day designed for those who love wine, genuine flavors, and the atmosphere of the Emilian Apennine villages.
The stop in Pianello Val Tidone is confirmed for Sunday, September 27, 2026, and concludes the 17th edition of the Valtidone Wine Fest, as part of the "Welcome Val Tidone" territorial project that unites five municipalities in the valley.
As tradition dictates, the day will be dedicated to "Pianello Frizzante": tasting stands for the sparkling wines of the Colli Piacentini, with Gutturnio as the star, paired with typical products of Val Tidone, and entertainment from the patronal feast of San Maurizio in Piazza Madonna.
