The classic amateur cycling race in the hills of the Novara region
The Trofeo Sportivi di Briga is a road cycling race held every summer in Briga Novarese, a small town in the province of Novara, Piedmont. Established in 1984, it is one of the most anticipated events on the Italian amateur calendar: reserved for Elite and Under 23 categories, it attracts the best young riders from across the country and numerous international teams every year, turning the town into a true capital of cycling for the day.
What makes this race legendary is its demanding course. The route unfolds on a circuit repeated multiple times around Briga Novarese, featuring a steep climb that has become a staple of local cycling history: the Muro di San Colombano. This short but fierce ascent tests the strength, endurance, and determination of the riders and often serves as the decisive selection point in the final kilometers. It is no coincidence that many names who have graced the Trofeo's roll of honor have gone on to successful professional careers.
With its long-standing tradition, the Trofeo Sportivi di Briga is much more than just a race: it is a community event that involves the entire town every summer, from local associations and volunteers to families lining the streets to cheer on the athletes. The organization is managed by the Associazione Ciclistica Sportivi di Briga, led by president Giuseppe Bellosta, who has passionately carried forward an event comparable in organizational complexity to running a small business.
For cycling fans, attending the Trofeo is an authentic experience: no endless barricades or grand fanfare, just the genuine charm of a local race that maintains a remarkably high technical level. The race day is also a perfect opportunity to discover Briga Novarese and the surrounding Cusio and Novara areas, with their rolling hills, vineyards, and nearby lakes.
The 43rd edition of the Trofeo Sportivi di Briga returns in the summer of 2026 to Briga Novarese, confirming its place among the premier races of the Piedmontese amateur calendar. The event has been formalized in the 2026 calendar of the Novara Provincial Committee of the Italian Cycling Federation, as part of a program of twenty races ranging from the youth categories to the Elite-Under 23 level.
As every year, the race will pit the best young riders against each other on the circuit enhanced by the famous Muro di San Colombano, the steep climb that almost always decides the final selection.
The detailed program and the start time for the 43rd edition will be announced in the weeks leading up to the race on the official website trofeosportivibriga.it and by the Novara Provincial Committee of the Italian Cycling Federation.
Based on recent editions, the race features a course of approximately 170-180 km, organized on a circuit repeated multiple times around Briga Novarese, with the decisive passage on the Muro di San Colombano in the final stages.
The highlight remains the steep Muro di San Colombano, where the race is traditionally decided, along with the anticipation for the battle between the Elite and Under 23 teams that have starred in recent seasons.
The race takes place in Briga Novarese (ZIP 28010), in the province of Novara, Piedmont. The headquarters of the Associazione Ciclistica Sportivi di Briga is located at Vicolo Marconi, 5.
Briga Novarese is easily accessible from the A26 motorway (Voltri-Gravellona Toce), taking the Borgomanero exit. By train, the reference stations are Gozzano or Borgomanero on the Novara-Domodossola line.
