About Tresana Mangiatrekking

The Tresana Mangiatrekking is a food and wine hiking event that blends the joy of slow walking with the pleasures of the table in one of the most evocative corners of Lunigiana, in the province of Massa-Carrara. A 9-kilometre loop trail, divided into three stages, leads participants from the Barbarasco Fair Park to the Malaspina Castle of Tresana, passing through ancient churches and villages nestled in the greenery. At each stop, you can taste the local DE.CO. (Municipal Designation of Origin) products, specialties that define the gastronomic identity of this stretch of the Tuscan Apennines.

A hike you can taste, in the heart of Lunigiana

The Tresana Mangiatrekking is a food and wine walking tour that invites participants to discover the territory of the Municipality of Tresana, in the heart of Lunigiana, in the province of Massa-Carrara. The concept is simple and charming: walk at a leisurely pace through castles, forests, and ancient villages, stopping along the way to sample local specialties. It follows the "slow hiking" philosophy, where a relaxed pace and connecting with the landscape are the true highlights of the day.

The route: three stages and nine kilometres

The trail is divided into three stages, covering a total of approximately nine kilometres, passing through some of the most iconic sites in the Tresana area:

  • Stage 1 โ€” Departure from the Barbarasco Fair Park and arrival at the Malaspina Castle of Tresana (approx. 3 km), where the first tasting stop is scheduled.
  • Stage 2 โ€” From Tresana to the Church of Saints Prospero and Caterina in Careggia (approx. 3 km), the second gastronomic stop.
  • Stage 3 โ€” From Careggia to the Acli Club of Groppo (approx. 3 km), with the third and final stop.

Along the way, you will cross forests, trails, and hamlets that preserve the memory of an ancient Lunigiana, dominated for centuries by the Malaspina family.

The DE.CO. products of Tresana

The gastronomic thread of the event is the DE.CO. brand products (Municipal Designation of Origin) of the Tresana area: a recognition that the Municipality awards to the most typical and identity-defining specialties of its tradition. At each stop, hikers can sample these products, discovering the authentic flavours of a land situated between Tuscany, Liguria, and Emilia, famous for its testaroli, chestnut flours, and rustic recipes passed down through generations.

Malaspina Castle and the local villages

The symbolic heart of the hike is the Malaspina Castle of Tresana, a fortress that belonged to the ancient Malaspina dynasty, which dominated all of Lunigiana for centuries through a dense network of castles. In 1565, Tresana became an autonomous fiefdom and even obtained the right to mint its own currency. The Mangiatrekking is therefore also an opportunity to rediscover this historical heritage, along with the churches and villages that dot the hills of the Municipality.

Who is it for?

The event is suitable for families, trekking enthusiasts, and food lovers: it is not a sporting competition but a day in the open air to be enjoyed slowly, alternating walking with convivial breaks. An original way to get to know Tresana and Lunigiana off the beaten tourist track.
