Traditional polenta and the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Tremonti di Tagliacozzo

In the heart of the Marsican winter, the small hamlet of Tremonti, part of the municipality of Tagliacozzo in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates one of its most deep-rooted traditions: the Polenta Festival. The event takes place every year in January, closely linked to the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot, the patron saint of animals and the farming world, whose feast day falls on January 17th.
This is a festival with an authentic flavor, far from mass tourism: here, the territory takes center stage with its rural identity and popular devotion. Nestled among the hills of the Marsica region, Tremonti preserves the heritage of agricultural and gastronomic rituals that have marked the lives of inland communities for centuries.
Polenta is the signature dish of this celebration. Prepared according to the local traditional recipe, it is served steaming hot to the many visitors who reach the hamlet for the occasion. It is a humble, convivial food rooted in Abruzzo's peasant cuisine, which, on cold January days, becomes the center of a collective ritual of sharing.
The festival is inextricably linked to the religious dimension of the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot. In Tagliacozzo, the recurrence is guarded by the Confraternity of Saint Anthony the Abbot and Mary Most Holy of Succour, which is based in the church dedicated to the saint in the upper part of the town. Saint Anthony the Abbot is traditionally invoked as the protector of domestic and working animals, a cult that holds deep meaning in the agricultural and pastoral landscape of Abruzzo: the feast renews the bonds of faith and community for those dedicated to the care of fields and animals every year.
The Tremonti Polenta Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Marsica region and inland Abruzzo. Those looking for a genuine experience, made of popular traditions, mountain cuisine, and village hospitality, will find here a precious stop on the Abruzzo winter calendar, within the municipality of Tagliacozzo, one of the most evocative villages in the province of L'Aquila.
