The traditional flower festival gets a crochet makeover in the village of Pollutri
The Traveling Crochet Flower Festival is an artistic and community project created by Pro Loco San Salvo, led by Maria Sabatini. Each year, it brings an original reinterpretation of the traditional Italian flower festival to various villages. Instead of fresh petals, streets and squares are decorated with large hand-crocheted panels, composed of tens of thousands of small, colorful flowers worked during the winter months by the so-called "uncinettine" (crochet artists). The result is a collective, durable, and traveling work of art that celebrates textile craftsmanship, female creativity, and a sense of community.
In the 2026 calendar, the event stops in Pollutri, a small municipality in the province of Chieti, nestled in the hilly hinterland of Abruzzo, just a few kilometers from the Trabocchi Coast. For the occasion, the village's historic center comes alive with an artistic trail that winds through alleys and small squares, offering visitors a walk among handmade floral colors and compositions. This stop is the result of a collaboration between Pro Loco San Salvo and the local Pollutri Pro Loco, which has combined the event with its own gastronomic and community initiatives in recent years.
The day is more than just an art exhibition: after visiting the flower festival, the heart of the celebration moves to Piazza Giovanni Paolo I, where food stalls featuring local specialties and live music await to liven up the evening. It is a perfect opportunity to discover typical Pollutri flavors and experience the convivial atmosphere of small Abruzzese towns, surrounded by crafts, good food, and social spirit.
From a local event, the Crochet Flower Festival has grown over the years into a true national traveling tour, crossing multiple Italian regions and provinces from June to September. With dozens of stops and the participation of crochet groups from various associations, its strength lies in direct community involvement and the promotion of host villages like Pollutri, which, thanks to this appointment, joins an ever-expanding artistic and tourist circuit.
In the official 2026 calendar of the Traveling Crochet Flower Festival, presented by Pro Loco San Salvo, the stop in Pollutri (CH) is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026. The Abruzzese village is preparing to welcome the artistic trail featuring handmade crochet panels, food stalls with local flavors, and live music in Piazza Giovanni Paolo I.
At the time of publication, the detailed program (times, artists, and menus) has not yet been released; it will be announced by the Pro Loco in the days preceding the event.
