Running in the mountains of Pontey
The Trail of the Macine of Valmeriana is the mountain running race of Pontey, a municipality in the middle Aosta Valley in the Province of Aosta. It takes place in September and is dedicated to the memory of Paolo Diemoz, who deeply loved the mountains above the village: hence the subtitle "Paolo Diemoz Memorial".
The courses
The main distance is about 22 km, accompanied by a vertical race (the Vertical Mongiron) of a few kilometers but with a significant elevation gain. The routes develop in the alpine area of Valmeriana, up to an altitude of 1798 meters, through pastures, woods, and ancient millstones – the stone mills that give the race its name.
A community race
Organized by the Polisportiva Pontey, the event has gathered over 170 athletes in past editions, with prominent names in Aosta Valley trail running among the winners. More than a simple competition, it is a village sports festival that celebrates the mountains and keeps alive the memory of those who loved these trails. For trail running enthusiasts, it is an event that combines technique, effort, and the beauty of the Aosta Valley landscape.
Trail of the Macine of Valmeriana — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the trail does not yet have an official date at the time of writing this description. However, the race is a well-established event on the Aosta Valley running calendar: it regularly takes place in September in Pontey, organized by the Polisportiva Pontey.
The usual structure, based on previous editions: a main course of about 22 km and a vertical race (Vertical Mongiron) in the Valmeriana area. How to get there
Pontey is located in the middle Aosta Valley along the SS26, a few kilometers from Châtillon (A5 motorway exit Châtillon-Saint-Vincent). Start and finish in the village, routes in the Valmeriana area.
