The Ferragosto challenge in the ceramic village of Castelli
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Traditional Plate Throwing from the Belvedere is the most anticipated and spectacular event of Ferragosto in Castelli, a small mountain village in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, world-renowned for its ancient ceramic art. Every August 15th, from the panoramic Belvedere of Piazza Roma, which overlooks the Leomogna valley and the imposing scenery of the Gran Sasso, a competition open to everyone takes place where participants throw a terracotta plate as far as possible down the slope below.
According to popular memory, the tradition was born from local master potters who, after finishing their firings, would playfully get rid of imperfect pieces by throwing them from the Belvedere. From this daily gesture linked to workshop labor, a true collective ritual has evolved over time, transforming the village into a festive stage every Ferragosto. Today, the plate throwing is much more than just fun: it is a way to recount the identity of Castelli, one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy', and its deep bond with terracotta and majolica.
The competition is open to everyone, adults and children alike, and follows precise rules: each contestant receives their own terracotta plate and throws it from the designated spot on the Belvedere, aiming for the greatest distance. The challenge, simple and adrenaline-filled, involves residents and tourists in an atmosphere of healthy cheer, amidst applause and cheering from the public gathered in the square.
The Plate Throwing is part of the village's rich summer calendar, dedicated to art, ceramics, and craftsmanship. During the Ferragosto days, workshops remain open until late at night, the historic Ceramic Craft Exhibition-Market enlivens the streets of the center, and art exhibitions alternate in the museums and spaces of the village. There is no shortage of Abruzzo gastronomic tradition, with tastings of typical dishes such as tacconelle with voliche.
Nestled in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, Castelli offers an experience during the festive days that combines nature, culture, and popular tradition. The Municipality of Castelli and the Pro Loco, together with local associations, curate a program every year that makes the Teramo village one of the most evocative destinations of the Abruzzo summer.
The Plate Throwing from the Belvedere is a fixed appointment of the Castelli Ferragosto, which is renewed every August 15th in the heart of the ceramic village. At the moment, the dates and the complete program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made public. In line with tradition, the event is expected in the afternoon of August 15th, from the Belvedere of Piazza Roma, within the summer calendar dedicated to art and ceramic craftsmanship. Definitive information will be communicated by the Municipality of Castelli and the Pro Loco.
