The medieval festival at Castello di Castellalto in Telve, Valsugana
Tracce di Medioevo is a cultural festival promoted by the Ecomuseo del Lagorai that, every June, transforms the town of Telve and its neighboring villages into a grand open-air narrative dedicated to the region's medieval history. The heart of the initiative is Castello di Castellalto, a fortress whose origins date back to the late 12th century, when the De Thelvo family began its construction, overlooking the Ceggio stream valley from above.
The festival was born from a desire to showcase the history and traditions of the ancient Castellalto jurisdiction, which included the municipalities of Telve, Telve di Sopra, Torcegno, and Carzano. Archival research, conducted on documents spanning from 1196 to 1410, recounts the story of the noble family of Telve, which split into two branches—Telve and Castellalto—around 1270. Every edition is shaped by this wealth of study, featuring meetings and presentations curated by local historians and researchers.
Tracce di Medioevo takes place over several days across multiple locations in Valsugana, offering a rich calendar of events:
The festival's distributed format allows visitors to discover not only the main fortress but also other memory-laden sites in the area, such as Castel San Pietro in Torcegno. The activities, designed for a wide audience, range from in-depth sessions for history enthusiasts to games suitable for teenagers and families, all set within a fascinating natural landscape at the foot of the Lagorai mountain range.
More than just an event, Tracce di Medioevo is a community project that strengthens the bond between the inhabitants of eastern Valsugana and their past. As part of the Ecomuseo del Lagorai's activities, the festival helps preserve and share the historical identity of Telve and the entire Trentino-Alto Adige region, offering visitors an authentic perspective on this corner of Trentino.
The 2026 festival kicked off on Friday, June 13, at 6:00 PM in Steinmayr Park, Telve, with the opening of an art exhibition by Sara Rigotti, accompanied by the female ensemble MisSonanti, directed by maestro Salvatore La Rosa.
On Saturday, June 14, with sessions at 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM, 5:00 PM, and 6:30 PM, Castello di Castellalto hosted "Escape Forest: The Secrets of Castellalto," a team escape game to be solved within an hour. On Saturday, June 20, the team game "Tracce di Medioevo" took place at the castle, played on a large board dedicated to the curiosities, characters, and stories of the fortress.
The festival continued on Friday, June 20, at 8:30 PM, with the evening event "Carzano between 1400 and 1500," and concluded on Sunday, June 22, at 10:30 AM at Castel San Pietro in Torcegno with "Castles of the Moon," a journey through the places and legends of Trentino with author Elvio Pederzolli and the Irish dance group FairyRing.
Telve is located in Valsugana, in the province of Trento. By car, it can be reached via the SS47 Valsugana road, taking the Borgo Valsugana exit and following signs for Telve. By train, the nearest station is Borgo Valsugana Est on the Trento-Venice line, just a few kilometers from the village.
Most festival events are free to attend; however, some activities, such as escape games and team challenges, require booking due to limited space.
