The Malfa squid festival, in the heart of Salina island
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Totanata in Piazza is the squid festival of Malfa, one of the most picturesque villages on the island of Salina, in the Aeolian archipelago (Province of Messina, Sicily). It is a highly anticipated summer event, dedicated to one of the most iconic products of these island waters: the squid.
The festival takes place in the central Piazza Immacolata, the heart of village life, where residents and tourists gather in the evening. Here, large quantities of local squid are cooked according to traditional Aeolian recipes and offered to visitors in a convivial atmosphere that captures the true spirit of the event.
Squid caught in the waters off Salina is prized for its quality and nutritional value. In Aeolian kitchens, it is prepared in many ways: stuffed, stewed, fried, grilled, or as a pasta sauce. The Totanata is the perfect opportunity to rediscover these authentic flavors, the result of a maritime culture that has always defined the lives of the islanders.
The event is part of MalfaEstate, the summer calendar of events promoted by the Municipality. Beyond the squid tasting, the evening comes alive with community participation and the typical atmosphere of a village feast, set among the narrow streets and sea-view vistas of a town also renowned for its viticulture and Malvasia delle Lipari wine.
Visiting Malfa during the Totanata means immersing yourself in the authenticity of Salina, the green island of the Aeolians, amidst sea flavors, tradition, and hospitality.
The 2026 edition of Totanata in Piazza in Malfa has not yet been officially announced. The event, dedicated to Aeolian squid and organized by the Municipality of Malfa as part of MalfaEstate, usually takes place in late August in Piazza Immacolata. We recommend checking the Municipality of Malfa's official communications for the final date and program.
Malfa is located on the island of Salina, which can be reached by sea via hydrofoils and ferries from the port of Milazzo (connections also available from Messina, Palermo, Naples, and the other Aeolian islands). From the piers of Santa Marina Salina or Rinella, you can continue to Malfa by local bus or taxi.
The festival is traditionally held on August 31st, in the evening (starting around 9:30 PM), in Piazza Immacolata.
The event is very popular during the high season: we recommend booking your accommodation on the island well in advance. Wear summer clothing and comfortable shoes for the hilly streets of the village.
