About Torre Maura Carnival

The Torre Maura Carnival is the masquerade celebration that the Roman neighborhood has finally gifted itself: a free parade open to everyone, featuring floats, costumed groups, live music, and local associations marching together. The event starts in the morning at the San Giovanni Leonardi church, crosses Via Casilina, and winds through Via dei Colombi—closed to traffic for the occasion—all the way to the Nostra Signora del Suffragio e Sant'Agostino di Canterbury parish.

A Carnival born from the neighborhood

The Torre Maura Carnival is one of the freshest additions to the Roman calendar: a grassroots neighborhood festival created through the collaboration of local associations, parishes, and area merchants, under the patronage of Roma Capitale. This is not the monumental carnival of the historic center nor a commercial tourist event; it is the celebration that a corner of the city in the eastern suburbs of the Capital, within the Municipality of Rome, the Metropolitan City of Rome, and the Lazio region, has decided to host for itself, filling its streets for a morning with masks, colors, and music.

Torre Maura, a neighborhood telling its story

Torre Maura stretches along Via Casilina, in the eastern part of Rome, and is home to tens of thousands of residents. It is a working-class neighborhood that grew during the 20th century around the consular road, boasting a dense community life made of parishes, schools, sports groups, and musical ensembles. The Carnival stems from this very fabric: it is the moment when the groups that animate the neighborhood all year round come together to march in the same parade. For many residents, it is also a way to reaffirm a local identity that rarely finds space in the grand narratives about the city.

The parade: route and atmosphere

The heart of the event is the costumed parade. The departure is set for the morning in front of the San Giovanni Leonardi church; from there, the group crosses Via Casilina and winds through all of Torre Maura, traveling along Via dei Colombi, which is completely closed to traffic for the occasion, until arriving at the Nostra Signora del Suffragio e Sant'Agostino di Canterbury parish. Along the route, floats, costumed groups, masked children, confetti, and streamers alternate.

Leading the parade is the William School Music, a historic music school in the neighborhood, which accompanies the procession with a motorized surprise and provides the live soundtrack for the morning. Numerous local merchants have also joined the initiative, decorating their storefronts and enlivening the rest stops along the route.

A free and participatory festival

The principle of the event is simple: participation is free of charge, whether you are in costume or not, with your own musical instrument, or simply with the desire to be there. There are no paid registrations, reserved stands, or tickets: anyone who shows up can join the parade. It is a deliberate choice that makes the Torre Maura Carnival an inclusive event, designed especially for the families and children of the neighborhood and surrounding areas like Torre Gaia, Giardinetti, and Centocelle.

What to expect

  • Floats created by neighborhood associations and groups
  • Costumed groups and a parade open to anyone who wants to join
  • Live music with the neighborhood music school leading the procession
  • Via dei Colombi pedestrianized for the entire duration of the event
  • Free participation, no registration required

The Roman neighborhood Carnival

In recent years, Rome has seen a multiplication of neighborhood carnivals: events spread across the municipalities, organized by committees and associations, which complement the events in the city center. The Torre Maura Carnival fits perfectly into this trend and represents a successful example, as it unites the religious and parish dimension, the school sector, and the commercial sector into a single popular event. For those visiting Rome during the Carnival period, it is an opportunity to see the authentic city, far from tourist circuits, and to understand how a traditional festival is experienced in the suburbs of the eastern outskirts.
