The convivial dinner celebrating the ancient tradition of the Toc in Cossogno, in the heart of the Val Grande
The Toc Festival Dinner is a convivial event that, in the heart of winter, brings the spirit of one of the most ancient and iconic traditions of Cossogno—a small town in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, Piedmont—back to the table. While the actual Toc rite is celebrated in church on St. Stephen's Day, this dinner serves as its secular and communal extension: an opportunity to gather, share a meal, and pass on the profound meaning of a centuries-old custom.
In the local dialect, the term Toc refers to a "chunk" of blessed bread. The tradition has roots in the Middle Ages: the first documented evidence is a parchment from 1328, though the practice is believed to date back as far as the 13th century. Originally, it was a testamentary bequest pro remedio animae, where parish land tenants would donate bread—and in the past, wine, oil, and cheese—to the poorest members of the community. Over time, it has primarily remained a tradition of rye bread, a symbol of charity and belonging to the village.
The dinner takes place at the Circolo Operaio Cossognese, the town's historic meeting point and the heart of local social life. Here, around shared tables, the community renews the spirit of solidarity that lies at the origin of the Toc Festival. It is a simple and genuine moment, far from large-scale tourist events, that captures the authentic soul of the villages in the Val Grande.
Nestled at an altitude of about 400 meters, Cossogno is one of the gateways to the Val Grande National Park, the largest wilderness area in the Alps. Visiting the village during the Toc Dinner means discovering an intimate, mountainous side of Piedmont, defined by traditions passed down through generations and a strong sense of community.
The Toc Festival Dinner is a wonderful example of how Alpine communities in Piedmont know how to preserve and celebrate their collective memory, transforming an ancient act of charity into an occasion for gathering and celebration.
