The enchantment of Christmas in an ancient marble quarry in Ornavasso
The Santa Claus Cave in Ornavasso, in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area of Piedmont, is one of the most well-known and visited family Christmas events in Italy. The setting is truly unique: the cave is carved into an ancient pink marble quarry, the very stone used centuries ago for the great construction projects in Lombardy. Today, that tunnel carved into the mountain becomes, for a few weeks each year, the most evocative home of Santa Claus.
The heart of the experience is the descent along a 200-meter underground tunnel, illuminated and decorated, which guides visitors in a crescendo of atmosphere to the grand 30-meter-high marble hall, where every child meets Santa Claus in person. Along the way, you will pass through light displays, listen to Christmas music, and enjoy settings curated down to the smallest detail. The full visit to the Ornavasso site lasts on average two to two and a half hours, and the route is designed to be accessible even with strollers.
Outside and around the cave, you will find the Elf Village, a themed area to explore at your leisure. Here, families will discover the toy factory with its artisans at work, storytellers, Christmas shows and entertainment, an evocative artistic nativity scene, and numerous photo spots. There are also refreshment points and rest areas, allowing you to enjoy the day at a relaxed pace.
Now in its seventeenth edition, the event has become a fixed appointment on the Piedmontese Christmas calendar, attracting thousands of families from all over Northern Italy and beyond every year. Places are limited and online booking is mandatory: the event sells out every year, so it is advisable to plan well in advance. Ornavasso, overlooking the lake district and immersed in the nature of the Ossola Valley, provides the ideal backdrop for this experience that combines the magic of Christmas with the charm of a truly extraordinary place.
