The Tindari Festival arrives at the Branciforti Castle in Raccuja, in the Nebrodi mountains
The Raccuja stop is one of the events in the Tindari Itinerante section of the Tindari Festival, the historic summer festival of theatre, music, and culture that has been based at the Ancient Theatre of Tindari, in Patti, since 1956. For several editions, the festival has chosen to step outside the famous Greco-Roman stage to reach the villages of the Messina area, and Raccuja, a small town in the Nebrodi mountains in the Province of Messina, is among the locations involved in this widespread cultural and community narrative.
The performances take place in the scenic Branciforti Castle, an ancient manor that overlooks the town of Raccuja. The castle's setting, nestled in the hilly landscape of the Nebrodi, offers spectators an intimate and evocative atmosphere, far from the mass tourism of the Tyrrhenian coast, where live theatre engages with the history and identity of the village.
The Tindari Itinerante section was born from the desire of artistic director Mario Incudine to make the festival not just a list of big names at the Ancient Theatre, but a cultural project capable of involving the entire territory. In addition to Raccuja, the section reaches various municipalities in the Messina area such as Librizzi, Piraino, Gioiosa Marea, Sinagra, Brolo, and Sant'Angelo di Brolo, bringing theatrical performances, readings, and shows to historic centres, squares, and symbolic landmarks of each town.
The programming for the Raccuja stop fits into the overall spirit of the edition, dedicated to the theme of 'Abumanesimo' and the figure of the playwright from Patti, Beniamino Joppolo. The show proposed at the Branciforti Castle addresses themes of sustainability and environmental responsibility, in line with contemporary dramaturgy attentive to the relationship between man and nature.
Raccuja is a village in the Messina hinterland overlooking the Nebrodi Park, one of the largest protected areas in Sicily. Attending a Tindari Festival performance in this context means discovering a lesser-known side of the island, made of mountains, forests, and ancient traditions, and experiencing live culture in a small town that, for one evening, becomes the protagonist of the great Sicilian theatrical summer.
The Raccuja stop of the 70th edition of the Tindari Festival takes place on August 9, 2026, at 8:30 PM, in the evocative setting of the Branciforti Castle. The event is part of the Tindari Itinerante section, which takes the festival out of the Ancient Theatre of Tindari to reach the municipalities of the Messina area.
On stage is the show "Drambula, descendant of an environmentalist father", with Daniele Ronco and directed by Luigi Orfeo. The proposal is part of the main theme of the 2026 edition, 'Abumanesimo โ being, not being, perishing', dedicated to the playwright from Patti, Beniamino Joppolo, under the artistic direction of Mario Incudine.
Daniele Ronco is the founder of the Mulino ad Arte company, known for its eco-sustainable theatre and the 'pedal-powered theatre' format, where energy for stage lights is produced live. "Drambula" addresses the theme of environmental responsibility with irony and civic tension, consistent with the vocation of a theatre attentive to the relationship between man and nature.
The Raccuja stop is one of the dates spread across the territory: the Tindari Itinerante section also involves the municipalities of Librizzi, Piraino, Gioiosa Marea, Sinagra, Brolo, and Sant'Angelo di Brolo. The complete program of the 70th edition, with all dates and times of individual shows, is available on the official festival website.
Raccuja is located in the Nebrodi hinterland, in the Province of Messina. By car: from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the Brolo-Capo d'Orlando exit and continue inland following the signs for Sinagra and Raccuja. By train: Brolo or Capo d'Orlando station on the Tyrrhenian line, then continue by provincial road.
Performances in the Tindari Itinerante section are generally free or have low-cost tickets. It is recommended to check access conditions on the official channels of the festival and the Municipality of Raccuja.
The show takes place in the evening outdoors, in the courtyard of the Branciforti Castle: it is advisable to bring a light jacket for the evening and arrive early to secure a seat.
