Tortorici's summer carnival, featuring costumes, music, and color parties in the Nebrodi Mountains
In Tortorici, a small town in the Nebrodi Mountains in the province of Messina, carnival is celebrated twice a year. Alongside the traditional winter edition featuring papier-mรขchรฉ floats, the Oricense Summer Carnival has become a staple, bringing the playful, high-energy spirit of the festivities to the height of summer. The name refers to 'Oricense', the term locals use to describe their town's identity, and it has become one of the most anticipated events in the Tortorici summer calendar.
The heart of the event remains the parade. Masked groups traverse the historic center, starting from the town squares and enlivening the streets with creative costumes, choreography, and infectious energy. A jury, often joined by the public, helps select the winner for the best mask, a highlight that celebrates the imagination and effort of the participants. Unlike the winter edition, which is dominated by large floats, the focus here is entirely on the masked groups and the festive summer atmosphere.
As evening falls, the Oricense Summer Carnival turns into a full-blown party. DJ sets with guest artists take over the stage, while the crowd gets swept up in the foam party, with bubbles filling the square, and the color party, where clouds of colored powder create a spectacular visual effect. Street food and drink stalls are always available, completing a format designed primarily for young people and those looking for a unique summer experience in the Nebrodi region.
The event is the result of hard work by the Giovani Oricensi Association and the Federazione Carristi Carnevale Oricense, with the support of the Tortorici municipal administration and local businesses. In recent editions, the summer carnival has also expanded to include side activities, such as themed lotteries, reflecting a community that builds social bonds and a sense of belonging around its carnival.
Immersed in the Nebrodi Park, Tortorici is a village in the Sicilian hinterland also known for its hazelnut production. Attending the Oricense Summer Carnival is a perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the province of Messina, far from the beaten tourist paths, where the celebration remains a true village and community affair.
Following the success of the winter edition in February, the organizers have announced the seventh edition of the Oricense Summer Carnival for August 2026. The event confirms the formula that has made the festival a success: masked groups parading through the streets of Tortorici, a 'best mask' competition, and a long evening of partying with DJ sets, foam parties, and color parties.
At the moment, the full program and schedule have not yet been released; they will be communicated by the Giovani Oricensi Association and the Federazione Carristi on their official social media profiles (@carnevale_oricense) closer to the event.
Tortorici is located in the hinterland of the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, exiting at Brolio-Capo d'Orlando or Sant'Agata di Militello, then following the provincial roads that wind into the interior. The nearest train station is Capo d'Orlando, on the Tyrrhenian line.
The summer edition traditionally takes place in early August, in the evening. The event is held in the historic center and is generally free to attend; some side activities may require reservations. For updated dates and the program, it is best to follow the official social media channels (Instagram and Facebook @carnevale_oricense).
