Handmade maccheroni with pork and ricotta sauce in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains
The Raccuja Maccheroni Festival is one of the most anticipated culinary events in the Nebrodi area. Every year, in the heart of the Sicilian summer, the small village of Raccuja—a municipality in the metropolitan city of Messina perched at an altitude of about 640 meters in the Nebrodi Park—opens its squares for an evening entirely dedicated to traditional cuisine and village conviviality.
The heart of the festival is the handmade maccheroni, prepared according to local recipes and dressed with a savory pork and ricotta sauce. The association's volunteers serve the dishes to guests in Piazza del Popolo, accompanied by a glass of fine local wine, in a festive and joyful atmosphere that has become part of the town's summer identity.
The evening is not just about gastronomy. Stalls set up for the occasion showcase typical local products and handicrafts from the Nebrodi, while music and dancing animate the square until late at night. There is also an area with inflatable games for children, making the festival a perfect outing for the whole family.
Raccuja is a village with ancient origins: the first traces of the settlement date back to the 11th century, when the Byzantines built the Monastery of San Nicolò del Fico. Having become a county under the Branciforti family in the 16th century, the town experienced a long period of splendor, flourishing in the 17th century thanks to the production and trade of silk, an activity that shaped its history and economy. Today, this cultural heritage provides the backdrop for an event that combines taste, tradition, and hospitality.
The Maccheroni Festival is organized annually by the "C. Spanò" Musical and Cultural Association, which oversees the setup of the festival and the welcoming of the many visitors who travel up to the Nebrodi village to taste the famous maccheroni and experience an authentic village evening in the province of Messina, Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Raccuja Maccheroni Festival is confirmed for August 13, 2026, starting at 8:00 PM in Piazza del Popolo. Once again, the members of the "C. Spanò" Musical and Cultural Association will offer visitors handmade maccheroni dressed with pork and ricotta sauce, accompanied by a glass of local wine.
The evening will be enriched by music and dancing, stalls featuring typical products and Nebrodi handicrafts, and an area with inflatable games for children, making it a celebration designed for the whole family.
The 2026 edition takes place on August 13, 2026, starting at 8:00 PM.
