In Città di Castello, a city of art in the Province of Perugia overlooking the Upper Tiber Valley, the Tifernate Carnival is one of the most beloved and participated traditions of the year. Its symbol is King Dodone, the mask that since 1877 has embodied the Tifernate carnival spirit and which symbolically watches over the festivities in Piazza Matteotti.
A day for children and families
The Carnival afternoon in the square is designed especially for the little ones: masks, confetti, music, games, and many moments of joy liven up the historic center. The festival is organized with the involvement of the Rione Societies, the Pro Loco, and local volunteer associations, who have always preserved this city tradition.
Carnival and Retrò Market
The event in the square often coincides with the Retrò market, dedicated to vintage items, retro clothing, and antiques, which is held in the morning in Piazza Garibaldi. A combination that, on the same day, unites the popular festival and the charm of the market, giving Città di Castello a carnival weekend in the heart of Umbria.
Tifernate Carnival — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the Tifernate Carnival is scheduled for Sunday, February 15. The afternoon in Piazza Matteotti, starting at 3:00 PM, is dedicated to children and families, with masks, confetti, music, and games under the benevolent gaze of King Dodone, the symbol of the Tifernate carnival tradition. The day begins in the morning with the Retrò market in Piazza Garibaldi, dedicated to vintage and antiques, according to the usual schedule on the third Sunday of the month.

How to get there
Città di Castello can be reached by car from the E45 (Cesena-Orte junction), exit Città di Castello, and by train with the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra (Perugia-Sansepolcro line). On festival days, traffic changes are expected in the squares and streets of the center involved.
