About Three Borders Mountain Feast

Every year in early August, the Campo del Popolo at the foot of Monte Cairo becomes the meeting point for three mountain communities: Colle San Magno, Casalattico, and Terelle. The Three Borders Mountain Festival is a popular celebration honoring the ancient bond between these villages in the Ciociaria region, in the heart of the Alta Terra di Lavoro. An open-air mass, craft markets, food stalls featuring typical Apennine products, and folk music bring this day of tradition, nature, and conviviality to life in the province of Frosinone.

A festival uniting three mountain communities

The Three Borders Mountain Festival is one of the most cherished events of the Ciociarian summer: a day that brings together the populations of Colle San Magno, Casalattico, and Terelle on the shared plateau of Campo del Popolo. For over thirty years, the festival has celebrated the ancient ties between these three villages of the Lazio Apennines, whose territories meet exactly where the event takes place, at the crossroads of their respective borders.

In 2025, the festival reached its 33rd edition, confirming its status as a defining event for these mountain communities in the province of Frosinone, in the Lazio region.

Campo del Popolo, a crossroads of three borders

The heart of the festival is Campo del Popolo, a high-altitude clearing nestled at the foot of Monte Cairo, between the Comino Valley and the Liri Valley, in the area historically known as Alta Terra di Lavoro. It is a place of great scenic and symbolic value: here, the paths and pastures of the three municipalities converge, and for one day, the festival transforms the mountain into a large open-air square.

A day of tradition: the typical program

The event spans an entire day, from early morning until late afternoon, following a schedule consolidated over the years:

  • Morning: Welcome for participants and opening of craft markets featuring local products;
  • Celebration of Holy Mass in the open air, a community moment that brings together the faithful from the three villages;
  • Opening of food stalls serving traditional peasant and mountain dishes;
  • Folk music and entertainment, accompanying lunch and the afternoon festivities.

The character of the day remains that of a genuine community festival: a simple and inclusive gathering dedicated to the tradition, history, and shared culture of the three villages.

The flavors of the Ciociarian Apennines

The food stalls are one of the main attractions of the festival. The stars are the typical products of the Ciociarian mountains and the Lazio Apennines: peasant cuisine, cheeses, cured meats, and specialties rooted in local shepherding traditions. The shared lunch at Campo del Popolo has always been one of the most anticipated moments for families and the many emigrants who return to the village for the occasion.

Colle San Magno and its territory

The Municipality of Colle San Magno, together with Casalattico and Terelle, preserves a heritage of traditions linked to mountain life. For these villages of the Ciociaria, the Three Borders festival represents an opportunity to meet and rediscover common roots in a natural setting of great beauty at the foot of Monte Cairo. In recent years, the promotion of local summer events has also benefited from programs dedicated to villages promoted by the Ministry of Culture.
